Spoilt motherboard?

Hi I have a Maximus 6 hero

Whenever I plug in the 24 pin the start button would come on with a light but when I press it nothing happens

But when I unplug the 24 pin it would explode into life and die because there isn't power supplied

I managed to revive it but unplugging the 24 pin and quickly plugging it back in

Only after several times it would boot and it will stop at Q-LED code 71 then it will die at 79

It happened a few times but then I managed to post it and get into the bios

However today no matter what I did it would never boot and i managed to get it to Q-LED 79 once but it died again and didn't post!

The PSU is fine, as I just bought it and tested it

I was wondering is this a spoilt Mobo or a CPU

I reset the CMOS several times but to no avail

Any suggestions?

All power connections are correct

CPU hasn't been touched, it was working for many months before that only it decided to not work

What are your system specs? (full part list if possible)

this looks like the overload protection is kicking in on the PSU. Double check your connections. Try unplugging your PC from the wall for at least 12 hours, then plug it back in, try to boot normally. If it fails try swapping it for a PSU you know that works fine. Do that like this:

  • Unplug your PC from the wall.
  • Unplug the 24 pin and 4+4 CPU power connector on the motherboard.
  • Take any PSU that you know that works fine, and fits your motherboard. (it only needs a 24 pin, and a 8 pin motherboard connector. Lets call it the diagnostic PSU)
  • place the diagnostic PSU next to the case.
  • Only connect the 24 and the 8 pin connector from the diagnostic PSU in your motherboard. (leave the others alone you only want check if it is your motherboard. We don`t want to add variables.)
  • Remove your GPU. Use the intergrated graphics on your CPU for the test.(if you CPU and motherboard supports it)
  • Plug the diagnostic PSU in the wall.
  • Connect a monitor and keyboard/mouse.
  • Turn on the PC and check the screen if it does a POST (Power On Self Test)
  • you should get an error like this: "No Bootable medium found." This is normal because we haven`t plugged in a HDD/SSD to boot from.

tell me if this worked, there are other option  but i need your system specs for it.

Z87 Maximus 6 hero

4770k

SLI GTX 980

8GB Crucial RAM

NHD15

How do you know it's an overload protection

I can't even get it to light up when I press the start button

It just idles there

Usually my peripherals are lit up but this time they are are blank

I don't have a diagnostic PSU too though :(

Oh yes I forgot

It's a cooler master v1000

 

well that wouldn`t be an issue for overload then, good PSU by the way.

I assume it is a brand new system. Do you have reference GTX 980`s or ones with Custom PCB`s?

It's a reference 980

Only a few months old

Yeah I suspect it's a bust Mobo

But is there any chance of a broken CPU? I need to know so I know which to RMA

there is one thing you can try do the same thing like you do with a diagnostic PSU but with your V1000

  • Unplug everything exept the 24 pin and 8 pin on the motherboard. basicly disconnect everything except the bare minimum for the system to post. (so only leave the 24 and 8 pin connected)
  • remove your GPU and go with the internal
  • if your system does a POST your motherboard and CPU are fine.

it also may be you memory try the following:

  • remove all the memory.
  • Take  1 stick and plug it in a slot.
  • boot if it fails try the next slot if that fails try the next etc.
  • Try the next stick do the same thing.
  • If this keeps failing try it with DDR3 memory from another computer

if this fails then it suggests it may be a dead motherboard/cpu

Yes I tried it and it has failed

So it really is a dead CPU or Mobo

How do I differentiate the 2? Other than testing them on known working components?

But I suspect it's a dead Mobo as it wouldn't even attempt to post when I press the start button

When I flash the cmos with the cmos reset button I once felt an electrical shock so that may be a sign

try to clear the CMOS by removing the battery and wait for 10 minutes than put it back. Also unplug the system when doing this or it won`t work. This removes power to the CMOS storage chip which is a volatile storage solution. This means that if power is lost all data will die with it. On the next boot after this your UEFI should rebuild it. 

EDIT: yes the shock may be a sign of bad grounding to the case

its probably the mobo RMA it and let there technical department check it out. They can fully test the Mobo.

Make sure you remove your CPU and put it back in the packaging. Also put the CPU cover back.

EDIT:

if they say it is fine it is the CPU. although I don`t see that often.

Oh and also I always encounter a problem when overclocking

The problem goes away when I reset the bios

But comes back after a few days

clearing CMOS will delete all value`s in the BIOS/UEFI and fix a wrong setting that isn`t compatible with your hardware (saved me a couple of times)

 

i usually clear CMOS when someone has a setup password. Just remove the battery and it will be cleared.
