Laptop Cooling Fixes?

CatzRuleZWorld

So my friend got a Lenovo E545 sometime last year because he needed a laptop and I suggested that because of the A10 APU (I know better now that you should get a real GPU). It's been pretty slow since a few months ago. I had him get an extra 4GB RAM for a total of 8 but that didn't fix it. Tonight I had him run HWMonitor while we were in a game of League of Legends and the max his CPU hit was 120 degrees Celsius and he went down to 20 FPS which is way below what that computer should be getting. Wow! Now I'm thinking I'll take it apart and put new thermal paste on the CPU. It might be dust buildup but I'll check that when I take it apart. He keeps it on a stand when he's at his desk just to raise it up to a good height for a monitor but it doesn't have a fan. Maybe putting a fan under it might help but it doesn't seem like that would be enough.

tl;dr, does anyone have any ideas to help laptop cooling other than dusting, reapplying thermal compound, and using an extra fan under the computer?

Just give it lots of breathing room. Specifically, try not to block the intake vents as much as possible, and I guess try to leave it on fabrics as little as possible, such as a bed.

Another thing you may be able to do is regularly clean the fans using some software from Lenovo. My Lenovo Y50 came with a "Lenovo Settings" program that has the functionality to ramp up the fans to high speed I believe in reverse to help blow the dust out of the inside of the casing. Now, the E545 may not come equipped with that software, and even if it does, that functionality may not be accessible/usable.

Check for dust in your laptop.

You could try a fan under it, but I used a USB Cooling Pad, basically a piece of plastic with a fan in it, so if you have an extra fan on hand, it would help. If not, just pick up a laptop cooling pad. Some of them are at stores online for around $5-10.
