Would my I5 2320 bottleneck my 980

CaptainJay
Go to solution Solved by FinestRyeBread,

Yes this is a huge bottle neck.

Hello, I have my cpu as an I5 2320 but i have a GTX 980. when i use this set-up i get only 40-60 FPS in modern and old games(such as CoD:WaW).  Is this a Bottle Neck or is there another weak link in the system. any Feed back is appreciated.

ouch yes...that GTX 980 can max out CoD AW at around 120FPS on highest settings mate.

your performance are really bad though...there might be something else you should at least get a steady 70FPS with those specs.

Have you installed latest GPU drivers?

Yes, it will bottleneck. That's a bit of an old architecture and it's clocked pretty slowly. The equivalent would be say... a 2.5-2.6GHz haswell i5, which nobody would realistically use as a gaming machine.

I would suggest getting a 3770K and aiming for 4GHz - 4.5Ghz and it'll last you well until cannonlake or even beyond, unless cannonlake is a HUGE improvement... which it won't likely be, as it is aiming to be a die shrink over skylake, and skylake is not all that impressive so far.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

It's not COD:AW, it's COD:WAW from 2007.

HD Graphics 4600 could probably run that shit on ultra

I'd buy a 2500k or 3570k and try to overclok them, if you dont have a board that will let you oc buy a 2600 or 3770.

your cpu is probably the bottleneck, but it could also be thermal throttling since i am sure that most i5's are good enough for gaming; at the very least enough not to cause such a significantly low fps

what resolution do you play at? that might also be the cause of your low frames with a gtx 980

I would upgrade that CPU, if you can. I'm pretty sure it is your issue.

It most definitely can run on some max settings @ 1080p. But no, not all options maxed out.

An i5 2320 isn't bottlenecking 2007 games to 40 FPS on medium. This is a troll thread.

he seemed serious?! one thing for sure is that if it is a serious thread there is something MAJOR wrong with that system...

and you run a GTX 980 on this and you get 40FPS in a game from 2007? seriously?

when you go in the task manager and check for CPU usage is it idling or is it pinned? do you have viruses?
