GTX 970 vs 280x for PSU

Gr33nL34f

So i'm building a pc for a family member and i've already went ahead and ordered the psu which is a Seasonic 550w G-series with the plans on getting the 280x. I'm now worried that that card will put alot of stress on the psu so my question is what your guys opinion on this and would the 970 be a better option because it uses less power than the 280x from what ive heard?

Either card would be fine, but the GTX 970 is a better option just for performance in general and for performance/watt.

What is the rest of the build though?

A 550w PSU will power both, but you are right, Nvidia's option will consume less power

AMD FX8350  2x ASUS Radeon R9 270X 4GB  ASUS Sabertooth 990FX  -  Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 16GB

That can handle the 280x just fine. The 970 would indeed consume lesser power, but if your budget allows for a 970 I'd rather you get the 970 instead.

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

Go for the 970, it isn't that much more to be honest and it will be well worth it.

I have had both in my system (see sig). And i used 350W with the 280X and 240W with the GTX 970; both scenarios under load.

who cares...
