Cheapest build possible

Zitech

Hey,

I'm looking to get some help around building a really cheap PC for my aunt. She is mainly going to use it for web browsing and playing various facebook based games. It is going to run 1 monitor. I already acquired a PSU and a CD/DVD writer. I also got a cheap graphics card that will go into it. I'm hoping to include an SSD for a boot drive and stick around 500GB of HDD storage. Since I'm building this as a gift for her I'll have to stick to a budget of around 460 USD. I will also have to purchase Windows 7.

I'm oriented towards going for an Intel processor due to having some issues with previous AMD processors. But I'm up for anything, really.

Thanks in advance!

You dont really need a dedicated GPU if she just going to browse the internet and playing FB games. So I put together something like this:

CPU: Intel Pentium G3240 3.1GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($52.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H81 Pro BTC ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($51.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($56.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Crucial MX100 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($64.95 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $305.90

This looks good. What about going for a 240GB SSD and skipping the HDD? That will save some money at least.

Why Windows 7?

Because she barely know how to use w7. Windows 8 would be too difficult for her to learn

I feel like windows 8 should be easier to use, at least after you install classic menu (You can use ninite for that) and make it boot to desktop instead of to the metro UI

As for your choice... you can go with a 240SSD, but it wont make sense if she want to download some movie or keep tons of picture. HDD is still better for that

Also get 2x4 GB Ram instead of 2x2, I dont think she's going to use up all 4GB Ram, but better have a bit more than dont have it. having a lot of tabs and stuff that she tend to forgot to close could really help here

I feel the same, but when you're 50+ and just browse the web etc. I don't think she will miss any of the features in Windows 8.

I wen't for the SSD due to he having a dropbox set up to save all her pictures. She only got about 3 GB of pictures which she has saved up over the last 3 years. I think we'll be good about movies as well. She is quite inexperienced when it comes to downloads etc. Her current PC is equipped with a 250GB HDD which isn't even full after 4 years of usage.

Great point on the RAM, I'll go with 2x4GB instead. We'll play it safe.

Thanks a lot for all the help I've received here!
