Best games on steam free or under $20

I just built my rig and do not know what to play? Personally burned out on first-person shooters..  What are some of the "Go-to-Games" on PC?

Skyrim with mods seems to be something people always recommend but there is Half Life 2, Portal, etc.  I say there are so many games out there new and old and of different game types that are really good that it isn't hard to find something to play.  Go on Steam and check out the store and check out GMG, Gamersgate and others.  I could recommend a million games and give you a back log for life but I don't want that to happen to you.  I say pick a game that you know you will like and actually put time into and play that.  Do not buy everything you can and feel overwhelmed by a back log for life.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

today, the total war games are outstanding. alien isolation is supposed to be good, i'm going to be picking that up myself. zigguart (kinda fps) darkest dungeon i hear is great. Kerbal space program and space engineers. stay away from most early access. unless i just said them or someone else does, do your research on them. a steam sale will be happening very soon (as sure as the seasons change) you can save for something you want on your wishlist.

Though I would never dream of turning someones gaze from modded skyrim, I feel compelled to mention the civilizations games.  Both a big change of pace from fps games, and I think they're still on sale at the moment.
