OK, what is up with M.2

Ady.533

Hey guys,

So I've been confused about why the connectors on m.2 drives and ports dont seem to match up...

well, my H97 M-E mobo has an onboard m.2 port, but it's port looks like it will match up with this msata drive, not this m.2 drive, since it doesn't have that little notch, but well, will the M.2 drive still work? and also, since the msata drive looks like a fit, will that Also work?

M.2 drives and mSATA drives (both shown above) use different connectors. M.2 drives themselves come in different sizes, 2280 and 2260 being the most common. These refer to the width (22 pins or mm I can't recall) and the length, 60 vs 80mm. There are dozens of different options though for M.2 drives.

M.2 drives are also either PCIe based or SATA based. The Samsung 850's are all SATA based and will not work on Asus or some Gigabyte boards.

M.2-keying-lsi.jpg

it just a keying

and not all mobo support all keyings

so you need to verify with the mobo manufacturer

Ncix also has a video explaining m.2. If your mobo has a port, be sure to check the manual for its type. My msi z97m gaming mobo supports both pcie and sata m.2 SSDs.
