Computer freezes when using certain USB port

sharki
This is the second problem with my computer I post about today

My case, a Sharkoon T28, has four usb ports at the front. That is mainly the reason I bought it.

The two left USB 3.0 ports have the problem that when I use them they freeze my computer.

Note that when I remove my usb verry quickly, it sometimes doesn't freeze. And when I plug in a USB drive before booting the port funtions normal.

I tried the following things:

-tried both ports, both of them freeze my computer.

-Just plug in a usb cable with nothing attatched, still freezes.

-Plug in a USB when choosing betwee boot modes (after a crash) still freezes: the keyboard doen'st respond annymore.

-Instead of the USB 3.0 header, i plugged the USB ports to a USB 2.0 header on my Motherboard. Still freezes.

the two right USB ports work fine, just like the ones on the back of my case

Edit:

I thought the problem was solved because it didn't occur anymore. Today the same problem happend, before I could even insert my usb

It was like this when it froze: (with my fingers on the metal part of the USB cable)

Could it have something to do with static electricity? After it happend I imideately tried to reproduce the crash but it didn't freeze on my anymore. Also there is no crash report. No bluescreen. Just a frozen pc.

So does the device or cord function in other ports? And have you considered that maybe the cord is faulty? And if its only the ports in the back it might be a driver issue.

Someone named Slim Shady on Tom's Guide seems to have created a fix for this problem. It's a little dated, but it checks out. See if this works for you.

A brief synopsis of what it does: Shows non-present devices in device manager via changing a value in the registry and letting you remove/reinstall various devices.

Guilty of building a PC that is more powerful than necessary... No ragrets.

I would bet it's a motherboard issue, not a case issue, because the small SMALL circuit that the case has installed wouldn't interfere with usb signal.  Since it's USB 3, try, if your mobo has them, install usb drivers, those exist sometimes.  And if you are using a "non-geniune"(that's all i'll say but you know what i mean), copy of windows, that may be the issue, as i have read people who have similiar issues on pirated copies of windows.

I can help with programming and hardware.

A faulty cord could explain why it even occurs before booting windows (can a driver issue also cause that screen to freeze??) but would the ports function once the port is plugged in?

If it still could be a driver issue I will try the guide from Slim Shady  :)

@Enderman I'll make it crash once more to get a report BRB

I agree on the motherboard issue, a way to check that and also check if it is a problem with the OS can be try to boot the system with a free live CD if you still have problems then it sould be something on your motherboard.

In the past I actually had a similar issue like this on my laptop whenever I tried to plug an external mouse into a USB port my computer wouldn't freeze but shutdown completely. Come to find out when I did a clean install and actually install the correct drivers my problem was solved.

Another issue I had was a crimp micro USB cord that I would use to charge my phone was causing my PC to have latency issues for some reason.

I started doing the guide from Slim Shady, and when I tried to reproduce the problem for a crash report the ports worked fine.

I´m not quite sure what fixed it, but they do not longer make my computer freeze  :D

Thanks for all the help!

I did not have a recent crash since I did not feel like freezing my computer before this post  :)

Edit:

Even when it froze today there is no crash report.
