Which should i get?

ShiftyShift

Now the xbox one and ps4 have considerably dropped in price im considering getting one or the other. Never really looked into either of them so i thought i'd ask you guys, which is the better machine for me?

I'm not a "hardcore" gamer, i game maybe 3 sessions a week lasting 2-3 hours, currently own a ps3 and it gets used way more for watching netflix, using as a media server etc, basically i use it whenever i want to watch tv upstairs, so im looking for which would be better as an all round home entertainment package, although im willing to sacrifice that for anything exceptional from one console or the other :)

Thanks

Shift

Since you say you use it for media more than games, maybe go for the Xbox One?

Xbox One IMO, because of some cool exclusives and because ps4 only gets rereleases from ps3

Whats better about the xbox one?

Supposedly it's more aimed towards a "rounder" media experience, covering all of the points of entertainment, not just games. Whereas the PS4 is mostly purely focused on the gaming experience.

the xbox one will be a redundant add if you already got PC / Steam Box.

i suggest getting a ps4 (exclusive games, ex: BloodborneUncharted 4: A Thief's End, The last of us) or wait for nintendo to release a new console next year :D.

Objective pro's of both:

XOne: Better multimedia, consistent exclusives (exclusives will turn into series).

PS4: Nice touchpad to add new ways to games, exceptional exclusives, great with PSVita.

Not to come across the wrong way but a PC can connect to a TV in the exact same manner as a console

either way i think you're better off with a PS4, some better exclusives, and in multiplats it will always be the better version, much like the 360 to the PS3

I still would go with the Xbox one. Through all I've done on the thing its been working flawlessly. Except for some lag in the snap feature, but if your not playing a heavy game it wont particualarly matter. Except in Battlefield 4 where for some reason every feature works immeadiatly. IMO I would take the Xbox one any day untill I get used to pc gaming (which is fantastic since I got a mouse for my laptop). And not to mention it just works and you have support for it any time of day which is stil very good compared to other companies.

Personally I don't think either will really serve you much better than what you have for media consumption. I know they hyped it up with the XBOne but really, what do you need out of a multimedia box? You want Netflix support which is something just about everything has. You'll want DLNA, Youtube and support for a decent range of formats. Again, most things you can plug into your TV and these days even most TVs will do that. Then there's Blu-Ray playback which you already have a PS3 for, you can do with either XBOne or PS4 and standalone players are pretty cheap these days.

I currently have this hooked upto my TV and I think even this combo covers what you said:

- Five year old laptop (mostly for indies and playing around with Steam in-home streaming)

- Blu-Ray/PVR Combo. For recording TV shows and Blu-Ray playback. Also does youtube, netflix, DLNA and plays back most formats

- The TV itself is just-pre "Smart TV", it has DLNA but limited format support and nothing else. It did support youtube but doesn't anymore.

- Wii U, for Nintendo games and indies. Again, does youtube, netflix and I can even navigate to my NAS' to stream media

So my recommendation would be to just keep your PS3. Then if you are really, really drawn to a specific title then go for whatever platform that title is on. If it's on multiple title? Look into their back catalogue and see what games most interest you. Although I suspect if you already have a PS3 then the PS4 probably won't be the best option. Purely because so far they've been mostly about ports of PS3 titles. But I don't know what games you're into so it would be foolish to suggest you go one way or the other.

Yes i was planning on building a gaming rig, but i cant really afford it plus peripherals and a monitor, i currently only have a like 5 year old dell laptop that only has vga output :/

Oh i will be keeping the ps3 as my multimedia center upstairs, i wanted something i can keep downstairs (and not have to move everytime i switch rooms) to use as a multimedia center (even though i have tivo but meh, tivo kinda sucks), i will most likely only be using the xbox one/ps4 for next gen exclusives as ive found that cross gen games are waay cheaper and the performance difference doesn't bother me too much.

Each has its own pros and cons.  Now that the Xbone dropped the Kinect, its actually priced reasonably.  Personally I would go for the PS4 due to its better graphics power, allowing better resolution for most games.  But you would also want to look at what exclusives you might want.  I ended up with a Xbone purely for Halo and because its what most of my non steam friends play.  While playing on the xbox, I've also encountered numerous problems with xbox live, especially while playing games like destiny.  Though the PS4 isn't without its own network issues.

Hope that helped a little.

I prefer my PS4.  I have all three consoles, PS4, XBOne, and Wii U.   The XBOne I've played for about an hour since I'd picked it up last year.  The Wii U, I think I've played for 10 minutes at most.  I picked that up a few months ago.  The PS4 is what I've been playing regularly.  Haven't had a reason to play the Xbox, since the game's I've been playing have been available on both PS4 and XBOX, and the graphics are going to be better on the PS4.  Also the fact that the exclusives I've wanted to play have all been for the PS4.  It's really all down to that though, exclusives.  That's where it's down to personal preference.

Yeah i think there are more next gen only xb1 exclusives that i want over ps4 exclusives. There are a lot more ps4 exclusives but most are gunna be released for ps3 so im not too fussed.

What, playing videos from my NAS? My NAS has a web-interface for the DLNA server and the Wii U's web browser is actually pretty decent
