Microsoft clarifies the “Windows 10 free for pirates” message. It’s not!

Source 1: linustechtips.com/microsoft-clarifies-windows-10… OP: Goodbytes

Source 2: neowin.net/upgrading-to-windows-10-on…

  • originally stated that even pirated versions of Windows 7 & 8 could upgrade to 10 free of charge

  • this was in “an effort to bolster adoption numbers and ‘re-engage’ the hundreds of millions of users that are running non-genuine software”

  • now Microsoft has scaled back on its plans, saying that the free upgrade won’t change the license state of a user’s OS

  • if you were running a pirated OS before, you’ll still be running a pirated OS

  • “According to industry experts, use of pirated software, including Non-Genuine Windows, results in a higher risk of malware, fraud (identity theft, credit card theft, etc), public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions.”

  • speculation that non-genuine Windows licenses will probably have some other limitations set on them

Japanese Supercomputer simulates 1 second of brain activity

Source 1: linustechtips.com/japanese-supercomputer-took-40-minutes… OP: Johners

Source 2: telegraph.co.uk/supercomputer-models-one-second…

  • 1 second of the activity of 1% of the brain, took 40 minutes to simulate.

  • Researchers used the K computer in Japan (705,024 cores, 1.4 PB of RAM)

  • Used the open source Neural Simulation Technology (NEST) Tool, to replicate a network consisting of 1.73 billion nerve cells connected by 10.4 trillion synapses.

  • The project’s main goal was to test the limits of simulation technology and the capabilities of the K computer.

  • The achievement offers neuroscientists a glimpse of what can be achieved by using the next generation of computers - so-called exascale computing.

  • Exascale computers are those which can carry out a quintillion floating point operations per second, which is an important milestone in computing as it is thought to be the same power as a human brain and therefore opens the door to potential real-time simulation of the organ’s activity.

  • Intel has said that it aims to have such a machine in operation by 2018.

They will have the opportunity to download the Windows 10 Technical Preview, install it and provide their feedback to Microsoft.”

  • Windows 10 software effectively overrides Android, essentially turning the Xiaomi Mi 4 into a Windows 10 device

  • it’s a ROM, based on Windows, that operates much like software from Cyanogen

  • ROM is designed to go beyond Microsoft’s Android apps and offer a native-like Windows experience on Android phones.

AMD FreeSync

Source 1: linustechtips.com - amd partner conference free sync will OP: Spartaman64

Source 2: tomshardware.com

  • Available as of the 19th of March.

  • Adaptive Sync Recap:

    • Matches the display's refresh rate to that of the game you're playing on a frame-by-frame basis.

    • The display will update at the very moment when a new frame is ready, rather than sticking to a fixed refresh rate all the time.

    • Results in a much smoother and tear-free gameplay experience.

  • Works by using the Adaptive-Sync protocol in the DisplayPort standard.

  • There are currently 11 monitors that should be available now.

  • Supported by R7 260 up to R9 295X2 and A6-7400K up to A10-7850K.

  • AMD said enabling FreeSync improved performance by about 0.2 percent when using an R9 290X.

    • G-Sync on a GTX 780, reduced performance by 1.5%.

  • Can introduce a mouse lag when it is enabled together with V-Sync

Half Life 3 Not Likely

Source 1: linustechtips.com/half-life-3-not-likey OP: romellobethebest

  • GabeN was interviewed on a podcast by Geoff Keighley (formerly of GameTrailers TV and G4)

  • currently a one-off podcast titled “GameSlice”

  • first was with GabeN and another Valve rep

  • “I get it. I'm a fan of TV shows, I'm a fan of writers, I'm a fan of movies, I'm a fan of games. I certainly understand why people are like 'Hey, I remember this awesome experience and I'm starting to get worried that I'm never going to get to have it again.'“ -GabeN

  • "So we understand it and we feel that. We think at the end of the day customers are going to be really happy with where we spent our time and how we've turned that into entertainment for them. But we're also going to build on what we've learned ... and we've learned a lot. We're not going to go all retro because there are too many interesting things that have been learned."

  • "The only reason we'd go back and do like a super classic kind of product is if a whole bunch of people just internally at Valve said they wanted to do it and had a reasonable explanation for why [they did], but you know if you want to do another Half-Life game and you want to ignore everything we've learned in shipping Portal 2 and in shipping all the updates on the multiplayer side, that seems like a bad choice. So we'll keep moving forward. But that doesn't necessarily always mean what people are worried that it might mean.”

  • sounds like focus will be on the hardware side as well as the platform itself (obviously)

  • “FCC argues that copyright infringement hurts the economy, so ISPs are free to take appropriate measures against this traffic.”

  • activists have stated that “Carving a copyright loophole in net neutrality would leave your lawful activities at the mercy of overbroad copyright filtering schemes, and we already have plenty of experience with copyright enforcers targeting legitimate users by mistake, carelessness, or design.”

  • article is unclear on whether there is a burden of proof associated with the throttling, if the ISPs are not regulated in what they can throttle due to “copyright issues” it could be a problem

Nvidia: ‘Pascal’ architecture’s NVLink to enable 8-way multi-GPU

Source 1: linustechtips.com - Nvidia's NVLink to Enable 8-Way GPU OP: Ahhming

Source 2: kitguru.net - nvidia pascal architectures nvlink to enable 8 way mul

  • Professionals, who need high-performance GPUs for simulations, deep learning and other applications also benefit from four graphics processors and could use even more GPUs per box.

  • Even the Intel Core i7-5960X processor has only 40 PCI Express 3.0 lanes, thus, can connect up to four cards using PCIe 3.0 x8 bus. (40GB/s is all the 5960X can give)

  • Nvidia will implement support of proprietary NVLink bus into its next-generation “Pascal” GPUs.

  • Each NVLink point-to-point connection will support 20GB/s of bandwidth in both directions simultaneously and each “Pascal” high-end GPU will support at least four of such links.

  • PCI Express bandwidth would be preserved for CPU-to-GPU communications.

  • NVLink is projected to deliver up to two times higher performance in many applications simply by replacing the PCIe interconnect for communication among peer GPUs.

  • IBM plans to add NVLink to select Power microprocessors for supercomputers and the technology will be extremely useful for high-performance servers powered by Nvidia Tesla accelerators.

I like the inclusion of excel in the lynda ad

I didn't learn it from lynda, I learned it as part of one of my classes at university, but people think I'm some sort of wizard when it comes to excel, and it's truly quite useful to be highly proficient in.

Hey, thanks for your awesome videos =)
Well about the nVidia vs AMD argument: I live in Germany and obviously I have no clue how it is in other countries, but here I feel like most people prefer nVidia over AMD.
Pretty much ALL of my friends with who are into computers/tech etc. and people you randomly talk about GPUs with, have nVidia cards. Basically all of us have either a 970, 980 or 780ti in some cases.
No one even considers buying an AMD card. It's like 980 vs 970 (We are students so no way we get a Titan =D ).
I think it would be quite interesting to do a strawpoll about what people's gut feeling is when buying a GPU. Not necessarily comparing speccs but just prejudice etc..

P.s. I get the feeling Linus & Luke prefer nVidia too.

P.s 2: those wigs tho......

Best regards, Marten
