Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0

I am thinking of getting  Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 rather than the Asus M5A99X Evo R2?

This the sabertooth a good mobo?

is this a new build?

the price for the Sabertooth is awful

not worth when you can get the Z97 board for the same price

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Intel at that pricepoint gives you more performance.

If you really want AMD though the sabertooth is the higher quality one but the price is ridiculous.

what you seeing is the special edition which has Gen 3 PCI-E when they only run at PCI-E Gen 2

Can't really have a look seen as I'm on my phone but does it have a front usb 3.0 header and does it support wake on lan?

yes, it has 2 rear usb 3.0 and it has a front 19pin usb3.0 header too, dont know if it supports wake on lan but after a google it seems most motherboards do so id be surprised if it didnt, google it when you get a chance.

The Asus 990FX Sabertooth R2.0 with 8+2 powerphase + digi vrm, is a rock sollid board.
But you might also take a look at the Asrock 990FX EXtreme 9 with 12+2 powerphase and digi vrm, and intel lan.

These 2 boards where on the same price point a while ago, If that is still the case, then i would like to recommend to take a look at the Extreme 9.

If you want some decent cheaper options, i can also give you that.

  • Asus M5A99FX pro R2.0  6+2 powerphase digi vrm
  • Asus M5A99X evo R2.0  6+2 powerphase digi vrm (only 20 pci-e lanes, with sli / cf support on 8x)
  • Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 6+2 powerphase digi vrm, no Sli support only xfire on 4x
  • Asrock 970 Performance 8+2 powerphase digi vrm.
  • Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P 8+2 powerphase digi vrm.

If you need more info about some particular mobo´s just ask. ;)

The only reason I bought this motherboard was because it had prime shipping and I had already waited a month since my last board was DOA. Good motherboard! But for the extra money it comes with some features that personally I wouldn't use. Overclocking is easy and the VRM cooling is great. But the same also goes for most ASUS motherboards. I recommend this motherboard http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-m5a99fxpror20 I bought an FX for gaming price-performance, and this motherboard stays true to that. Depends on the features you need though

I've found it annoying that most people are like Intel are better on this topic

But due to me needing to buy it today, i had to risk it and get the Asus Crosshair V formula

And to all the intel fans boys, I have been using intel ever since my first computer and i just simply want a change from intel to AMD, i already know that the 8 core isn't as good as single core thing compared to the i5, but im not bothered:)

oh gosh...people around here only care about performance and prices...we could not care less if the CPU we recommend are AMD or Intel...Blue or Red...square or triangle...all we care about is performance, cost and upgreadability...and in that regard the intel haswell line up is a much better pick at every pricepoint.

Here, two kits...same cost...which one would you pick?!

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor ($168.99 @ NCIX US)

Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($179.88 @ OutletPC)

so...as you can see buying a sabertooth and an old AMD FX chip at this point in time makes absolutely no sense what so ever for a gaming rig...what about a workstation then? here we go:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($241.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Motherboard: ASRock H97M PRO4 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($79.89 @ OutletPC)

Now there you go...so please stop your AMD cheerleading and saying sh!t about LTT comunity members around here, these guys know what they are talking about, they are well informed and not biaised in any way shape or form they only do recommendations based on price/performance.

Thanks!

@Chris Greenwood, the Crosshair V Formula is very good for AM3+ and overclocking, or so I've heard. That being said, I think it's overpriced for your average person.

then go with the intel core i5 kit that i've suggested a couple post above...it's much better. The AMD FX line-up is old, outdated, and was under-performing even at launch back in 2012 they couldnt compete with intel cpu's that are 2 and 3 generations old now.

Don't trust me? Just go look at a few gaming benchmarks and see for yourself.

lol realy? i mean realy?

This has totaly nothing to do with AMD cheerleading.

This all about the lack of topic information, Who knows "op´s" personal situation?

- Maybe op allready has a AMD FX cpu, But his motherboard died? looking for a replacement? idk, you?

- He has nowhere asked any recommendations towards a new build.

- He asked questions about a particular mobo, so speaking about anything diffrent then that is irrelevent. (aka offtopic)

- If op was looking on information about which route to go AMD or Intel for his needs, then he should have made a complete diffrent start post right?

The problem with topics like this ending up in flame wars, is because the lack of information provided by the op.

- Also offcourse i totaly agree with what you are saying about your builds, and the price to performance, If you are looking for a new setup, then going with AMD nowdays, doesnt make any sense especialy for gaming, But That was not where this topic was all about.

- If op had asked for help recommending him a setup for gaming, then i would have recommended him an intel setup aswell. But that was not what he was asking.

Next to that, if i wanne say something negative about this community in general, then im totaly free to do that.

As long as there is no Moderator or Administrator that tells me otherwise.

Sometimes you have to know how to read between the lines...turns out OP seem to be building a gaming rig from scratch and had the intentions to buy a super expensive AM3+ board with an FX chip to put inside this machine.

Now go ahead and make him good recommendations based on that.

Yes offcourse, but that was came to light lateron.

After i made my first post.

Your builds are totaly perfect. I would not recommend a AMD FX cpu at all nowdays in most situations.

Unless you are looking for a cheap virtualization solution, to run multiple VM´s and or servers.

I have a FX8350 my self for more then 2 years, and i definitely know its pro´s and con´s.

I cannot realy recommend them nowdays anymore for a gaming rig.

So reading between the lines, sure you are totaly right, But i couldnt do that, the time i made my first post.

Because op had not provided that extra information, i just answered his question about the Sabertooth and moved on basicly.

I´m probably a bit more principel then other people, i just ansewr the questions that are litterly asked. :P

i recon that and respect that, but it would be better to ask in the first place why he want to buy such an expensive AM3+ motherboard and what is the reasoning behing all this. :) but okay! ;)

You might be right about that.

I basicly should have ask further, but yeah like i said im active on allot of hardwre community´s.

So that makes me somethimes, ansewr a litterly asked question quickly and move on ;).

But it just annoys me a bit, that some people jump in, and directly starting to yell and scream to go intel.

Without knowing any further information. That was a bit my rant.

I understand that, but even if the OP would have had an FX-8350 in hand and a broken board...IMHO the sabertooth still doesnt make much sense...it's overpriced and some 970 chipset boards that are way cheaper (Ud3P, Asrock 970 performance, MSI 970 gaming, asus M5A97 EVO etc.) could get the job done for much less...but EVEN THEN i would argue that it's probably best to just sell the FX chip online to the most offering and move on to a locked core i5 or something like that.

Yeah definitely The Sabertooth is expensive.

But there are cheaper, and also decent alternatives, like i posted in my first post.

But if op is looking for a cpu + mobo, then by all means go with intel if you can afford, for a gaming rig.

Because going with a FX 8 core doesnt realy make sense for gaming.
