Xeon Cooling

Go to solution Solved by Thorium19,

Don't go for a 212 evo, if you can get the be quiet pure rock the go for that instead. Scan have it for about £25 last I checked. It's quieter than the 212, has better cooling performance and is he same price, even slightly cheaper as well. The 212 evo has been the staple budget minded cooler for the last few years but it's not as good as some of the competition these days.

Also, the xeon should be fine without an aftermarket heatsink, at least initially, as it doesn't have a built in iGPU which lowers heat output a noticeable amount. If you feel you want to have a quieter and slightly cooler system however, grab a pure rock.

Also, have a look at the overclockers UK clearance coolers, their B grade stuff is good quality, usually open box display models. Yesterday in fact I actually ordered an alpenföhn Brocken b grade from them for £22 shipped, which is half the retal price, so you can see how good the deals can be from them.

Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of ordering an Intel Xeon 1230 V3 Haswell CPU but would like to upgrade the cooler as i don't really trust the Intel stock coolers.

i do not want to spend an arm and a leg on a cpu cooler as it cant be overclocked, i just want something quieter and better than the Intel stock cooler, ideally for around the £30 mark.

The system specs are:

Intel Xeon 1230 V3

Asus Z97M-Plus

8GB Corsair LP Memory

2x Kingston 240GB SSD's (RAID0)

Gigabyte GTX970 G1 Gaming Edition

Corsair RM550 PSU

Corsair Obsidian 350D

Any recommendations you guys could make would be very much appreciated.

I have been looking at using a CM Hyper 212 EVO with a Noctua NF-F12 Fan.

Again any recommendations i would be grateful for.

Thanks, Rob.

Trust me the Xeon 1230v3 runs perfectly fine with the stock heatsink, about 45 degrees

Anyway recommend the 212 Evo

Any cooler will work and it runs fine with a stock cooler no issues.

one of the other things that Xeon do better then the "i" naming cheme is power draw, so a stock cooler should do fine

I agree here, but if you MUST upgrade the cooler a CM evo 212

I see, so from what i can gather you guys would recommend sticking with the stock cooler then upgrading if i am unhappy with it.

I have one and the stock heatsink works great but I'm using a Noctua NH-C14 because I'd rather it be cooler.

You might want to look into a Xeon 1231v3. At least in the U.S., it's a tad cheaper and should perform a tad better than the Xeon 1230v3, but probably just a tad.

well as everone is saying you should go for the stock one,but if you don't like it then get a CM 212 EVO (with noctua fan) I want to try to offer something else I just don't know how much money that is (£30)

Can't do much in the way of overclocking the 1230 to begin with, so the stock or Hyper 212 should be just fine

The fan on the stock cooler for the Xeon E3 CPUs is actually a little better than the stock fan for Core i5 and i7 CPUs supposedly. I wouldn't buy an aftermarket cooler until you see whether you really need it; e.g., if the temps are too high or if the stock cooler is too loud. The silicon lottery is at play for locked chips too: sometimes you get one that works on lower voltages and will thus run cooler, sometimes not.

Thanks i have just looked at the Pure rock, if i decide i need to upgrade the cooler i think i will be going for this one over the CM 212, i am a fan of the Dark rock series but couldn't justify the cost for a CPU that wont be OC'd, but id never spotted this one, or at least the price anyway.

It's only relatively new out, so not many people have noticed it yet, so it's not surprising you wouldn't have seen it.
