First impression of the new Chromebook Pixel 2015

jchenabc

Just a quick impression on the new Chromebook Pixel 2015.

I had a little play time with the old Chromebook before. It was already a nice machine, but the new Chromebook is way better. The design is almost the same, boxy and solid, no flex at all.

Super fast shipping from Google Store. I ordered it on the day it was announced, they shipped it the same night. The fastest product release to my hands ever !

Battery is solid. Since I received it at 11:00 AM, it just kept on going. Still 20% left, after 6 or 7 hours of usage. I did everything, Netflix, Spotify, Google Doc. It never got hot ! YEA, for the Broadwell chip!

$1000 is a lot for a browser, but I think the platform has come a long way. I am gonna try to ditch my Mac, and see if I can replace it. Also, Type-C. seems like a solid connector.

Screen is beautiful, might be even better than my Mac. By default, Google scale it down to 1280x850, so everything looks nice and big. If you have decent eyesight. I will go for 1920x1270. The native 2560x1700 resolution is just too small for comfort.

It actually looks pretty neat IMO. I'm a fan of the squared off design.

At 1000 it makes no sense. At half that price, they are perfect for their intended market. At 1000, you're up against Windows and even OS X laptops that offer more specs, more usability and aren't so reliant on a WiFi connection just to access your data.

$1000

Yeah.... no...

Why would you spend 1k on a chromebook? just no...

The landscape of Chrome product is pretty bad. Other than the Pixel, everything else is crap. I used the HP 14 inch one before, and it is terrible. The screen viewing angle makes me want to burn it. Chrome OS is no where near where it should be. I would pay $700-800 for a solid machine that will last over 10 hours. I guess the markup is for being the early adopter...

Sorry but 1k for a netbook that runs a browser it's too much.

There are lots of high-end 13inch netbooks (including the macbook air) I really don't see the point of buying that.

I love the design of the laptop itself. Easily the best looking laptop in my opinion but that is just the style I like, nice sharp edges and no stupid curvy crap. However the whole Chromebook idea isn't what I want which is fine. If you could remove the SSD and replace it with your own I would be really happy because I would load W7 or Linux Mint on it and just use it to browse and watch stuff and do some light gaming. Maybe Google could release a version like that or something.

If anyone could point me to a laptop that looks like the pixel or the pixel 2 and has descent specs, reasonable price and some changeable hardware I would be very thankfull. I have been looking for one for quite some time but no dice.

I doubt they actually have a SSD for 32GB of storage.  The SD slot does fit an entire SD card. With the new U3 class SD card, you could fit a 256GB SD card in there. Not sure if that's possible though.

How do you like Type C as a charging cable? Is it similar in plugging in as a regular usb or is it more similar to apples lightning?
I personally love the magnetic connectors on macbook pro and microsoft surface and I'm honestly a little sad to see it go on the new macbook.

Finally manage to drain all the power after watching the WAN show. I really like the fact that you can charge on both side. There is a slight click when you plug in the port all the way. It's very similar to the lighting, maybe just a little harder to pull out. it's defiantly less accident\children proof like the MagSafe2. Charges really fast though... might just be a Pixel 2 thing. went from 10% to 100% in an hour.

Lel. I'd rather get a Macbook Air at that price.

May end up doing that actually.

Gorgeous device, but still way to expensive for a netbook. Their profit margins must be ridiculous on that thing.

I like it, but I don't like the lack of function at a high price point.

I've been contemplating downgrading from my ASUS VivoBook to a Chromebook, which is actually a very functional machine despite the display which looks like they picked it out of the landfill, but I would never "upgrade" to the Pixel. I'd spend more for less functionality, at least if I downgrade, I can sell the VivoBook and make money.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

I'd buy one but I don't need a new laptop. If google keeps updating this machine every 2 years, I'll buy the next version. And I'll put some form of debian on it. ChromeOS can go die in a fire.

Shame because that laptop would work so well with a Linux distro for media and light coding. I really want one but if I can't change the OS then no thanks.

M8 this laptop is proof of concept, you shouldn't be buying this laptop you should be buying other cheap chromebooks.

Does Google still do the thing where you have to take it apart so that a certain contact isn't making a connection so that you can even flash the bios to a different bios so that you can install Ubuntu to install Windows like in the CR-48? Or is it much easier to install another os now?

You can easily install linux on it or simply run a full linux distro from within chrome os. After reading about crouton for chrome os I really plan on buying a pixel.

This one was on my Twitter feed: If you can live with 1080p on a 13.3 " screen (should be reasonable enough) and a core M this one literally has a hdd you can use and a full fledged os:

The twist is that it's 300 bucks cheaper.

I don't really want to do it within anything. I want it to be the main OS with nothing else on it. It does look gorgeous though. I don't need a laptop though because I am either in my house or at work so there is no need for a portable device really.

Its such a waste of potential, it shows how nice they can manufacture a laptop, shame its such limited functionality

I don't understand why everyone has an issue with it, it's basically the same specs as any other 1k dollar laptop, but with with less storage and a different OS.

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it
