Hey everyone, I am currently building two pc's for my brother and a friend. My brother has a budget of 800$ and my friend has a budget of 600$ For my brother, I want to know if I should get a FX 8320 with a 212 evo cooler or a i5-4460 with the stock cooler. As for my friend, I was thinking of either getting a fx-6300 or a i3 4160. My thoughts are that I should get the intel processors because they have a great upgrade path, but if I get the 8 core FX for my brother, I wont need to upgrade for quite some time. Plus I can overclock since I have a really good cooler. As for my friend, I could get the i3 since im not planning on overclocking and I can get an i5 later, but with the fx-6300 I could upgrade to the 8 core FX later on too. Please help me with this dilemma! Thanks.

For gaming i5-4460 > 8320 and Haswell i3 > FX6 (it's actually better than FX8320 in the majority of games). FX has very weak single core performance in comparison, which makes Intel the better choice for gamers.

RIP in pepperonis m8s

Get the i5 and the i3. No matter how much you overclock the fx it still won't match intel's gaming prowess in most games. Also in order to overclock an amd processor you also have to spend a decent amount on a proper motherboard and cooling, meaning that you would end up spending more money for a worse performing processor that also wastes more power.

well, you pretty much answered it yourself, Am3+ is a dead platform, but the cpu are monster OC'ers. and LGA1150 is great for future upgrades but more expensive.

may your framerates be high and your temperatures be low. #pcmr

It depends on the pricing, And what games they will play.

Mainly AAA titles id recommend the FX 6300 over the i3-4160, But if there is more indies involved id recommend the i3-4160 over the FX 6300

But between the i5-4460 and FX 8320 id recommend the i5, It has better performance in everything exept for Heavily threaded workloads such as rendering.

Personally i would go with AMD, But it is my preference. Nothing more.

My Gaming PC

|| CPU: Intel i5 4690@4.3Ghz || GPU: Dual ASUS gtx 1080 Strix. || RAM: 16gb (4x4gb) Kingston HyperX Genesis 1600Mhz. || Motherboard: MSI Z97S Krait edition. || OS: Win10 Pro

The FX series is trash. Wish I found that out before I bought them. Contrary to popular beleif, they aren't 8, 6, or 4 core. Each core is a virtual core. So, my FX 4130 is really just a 2 core with 4 threads.

Besides, no matter which way you put it, and i5 with threading will ALWAYS beat an FX series.

The only good budget AMD Cpus are the 760k and 860k

Holy crap thanks for all the responses! I think i'll go for the intels. Just another question, when dx12 comes out and allows the extra cores of the FX to be utilised it games, will it make a big diffrence or would intel still be on top? I know that multi-threaded games are becoming more and more popular now.

Most likely no. You have to remember that the Intel CPUs will also get an advantage. Even if there was a difference, it wouldn't be extremely noticeable. It's just a different API, not a CPU upgrader.
