Yes definitely, The TDP of the MSI Lightning 290x is 290w so you are good!

My signature specs,...

I ran a R9-290 (overclocked to 1175/1333) and pushing a lot of wattage via extra voltage for quite some time (over 6 months)

All from a 600w piece of crap Coolermaster PSU (since removed, but still works fine, didn't fail)

Now I have a 750w Evga PSU and it's also great but thats not the topic at hand :)

Could be loud under load - Having more headroom makes the fan noise less of an issue when it ramps up and continues to do so past 50% PSU usage.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

The fan noise between diff PSU's isn't the same,.. google reviews on PSU's you can buy to see if the pro's outweight the cons.

650w still isn't much better than the 600w.

For a 290 based system I'd be using 700w minimum, for peace of mind and expandability in the future.

Total system power consumption.

Tested by Anandtech with an i7-4960X that has a TDP of 130W.

Ill take it that the 750 PSU is more than enough

Its an i5-4690k, somin like that

I think that 600W is fine for that, but it would be better idea to get 650 or even 700W

Unless you intend to get another 290X for Crossfire later, your system isn't going to pull more power than ~405W as shown in the chart.

You want the max load to not exceed 80% of the PSU's max output, because PSU efficiency is tested only at a few load levels. 80% is one of them.

So for a single card, a 500W unit will do. If you intend to Crossfire, you'll want at least 900W.

I'm using a 290X Lightning right now. You can see my specs in my profile.

Kool, thank you. Would a 600watt PSU hurt the system? I won't do crossfire but may upgrade the card to whatever version is next

I'll go with 600PSU, should cover me for any upgrades and seems if it can handle 290x it should at least handle the "390"

Wait a minute. DO NOT SPEND 385 on a 290X. Are you insane? Fixed for you and get a better case or an AIO water cooler http://pcpartpicker.com/p/J9LqXL

TDP stands for thermal design power it has nothing to do with the power consumption of the card, it is to do with the cards heat expulsion

CPU-i5 4690k 4.4ghz @ 1.190V, MOBO-MSI z97 gaming 3, Cooler-hyper 212 evo, GPU- r9 290x asus directcuII (-37Mv), Storage-120gb v300(switching soon), 1tb caviar blue, CASE-Red/black h440, PSU-Antec TPC 650.

I already have the case, but why change the ram, I thought it doesn't really matter. I hear the lightning is the best 290x so why not. I'm not gonna OC unless its a last ditch effort so I don't think I need water cooler.

Dude as a 290X Lightning owner, a former TRI 970 owner and now quad 980 owner telling you. Get the strix and the faster 2 sticks of memory.

You'll get better performance from a 1550 core, 8000 memory 970 than an overclocked 290X while using 200w less

Aight, so I'll go with the 970 and faster ram, the cooler you chose isn't gonna fit my case, Ill stick with the one I chose.

That cooler you selected should get you to 4.2-4.4
