Steam lowers download speed?

Speedteast measures in Mbit/s, And steam measures in Mb/s.

One Mb/s is about 8Mbit/s.



8mb/s seems about right for you connection.

It is not really a problem, but I was just curious. But when I go on SpeedTest.net, I get 70mb/s download. And when I download games on steam its peak is 8.2mb/s. I know there is a setting or something like that but that is not restricting it. I was just wondering why this is?

On steam you can change which server you are connecting to, might be worth changing to see if its faster

 

it can also happen if steam is busy, maybe on sales days or weekends etc

Actually fishymindz is right 70 mbps is 8.5Mbps - so you are getting 100% of your download speed

Just so you know they're written as Mb/s (Megabit per second) and MB/s (MegaByte pre second) The b in Mb (Megabit) should be lower case and the B in MB (MegaByte) should always be capitalised. :)

 

Always look for this as this is how ISP's look to try and catch you out, as well as the renowned phrase "up to ***Mbps)

 

Back to the OP:

 

As he said the usual conversion of Mb/s and MB/s is 8:1 but its flaky at best. Ideal for estimates but nothing accurate.
