Power supply for gaming build suggestions

So, first time here at the linustechtips forum. I've been watching Linus tech tips videos at work for insight on possibilities on my gaming pc i'm building. This isn't my first build, BUT it is my first build for gaming/streaming/editing etc.

It might get a bit confusing, as i suck at summarizing....So, here we go!

I'm planning on over time upgrading this build to be complete, and of course room for upgrades 4-5 years or less from now.

Here's the build i'm planning so far, I'm pretty set in stone about what i'm getting, and i've been building the specs for this for the past few months.

I'm not building a 4k machine, but I may eventually upgrade components for 4k, but for the most part 1080p is just fine and i'm mostly looking for maximum performance with most games in 1080p and at least 60fps.

GPU: 2x Nvidia GTX 970 4GB (one to start but buying a second one later)

MotherBoard: ASRock Fatal1ty z97 professional motherboard

Processor: i7 4790k

RAM: 2x 8GB Gskill sniper memory 2133mhz (1.6 volt i think)

Storage: Eventually a 120-240GB SSD, but to start i'll have a 1-2TB 5400 RPM. (Open to suggestions on Hard drives as I'm also looking at 7200RPM drives, but keep being told that 7200 is faster, but won't be needed if i have an SSD and i'm not worried about load times.)

Case: InWin GROne (most likely black edition)

and.. of course.

Monitors: 2x 27'' or maybe 24'' (i'm just unsure)

PSU: (This is the part i'm a bit unsure of, mostly because I know I'll need alot of options regarding cables, etc.) I'm thinking of going with a 1000w PSU but I want to make sure i'm not pulling more than i need. I've been told an 800w would be good for what i need, but i'm open to suggestions.

I'm not so much asking for a PSU wattage suggestion, as I am asking what PSU brands should I be looking at.

I've looked at a few reviews and so far the top brands seem to be Cooler Master, Corsair, EVGA, there's only 4-5 but i can't remember them all.  (maybe NZXT, but not sure)

So, that's all i'm looking for!

Also, if anyone knows where to find these components for a decent price, or sees an issue (that isn't related to any AMDvsNvidia or intel vs amd options) feel free to recommend separate pieces for this build.

Also, via price-checking this build is around 1500$ finalized, mostly due to running dual 24'' and/or 27'' monitors. Still debating on if i want to spend 200$ on a 27'' 60hz over a 24'' 144hz monitor.

Budget Build, some pieces i'll be buying over-time and not all at once!

GPU: $350

MotherBoard: $150-$200

Processor: $350

RAM: $150

Storage: $200 (but will expand in future most likely)

Case: $100-$120

Monitors: $200-$300 per monitor, plan on two, but if i find a deal for any 24-27'' around $150 that are decent i'll probably go for those, so far looking at ASUS monitors, but also LG, and a few 'decent' options, and will start with one monitor, and get the other later.

PSU: Not trying to be cheap but would rather keep it under $100 I'm guesstimating around 750-800w would be what i'm looking for.

I appreciate your help, and thanks for reading, because i know i type too much.

You're thinking of going with a 1000w PSU and are looking at 4-5 or more years of use?

Raise your $100 budget by $40, you won't get anything as good as this for the price http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-120g21000xr

EVGA PSU's that use SuperFlower as their OEM are godlike, oh, and a 10 year warranty.

Looks like it goes down to $110 on Newegg every now and then in the price chart.

Welcome to the forum, if your looking for the best brands then choose somthing from Corsair, Seasonic, EVGA, Antec or Cooler Master, you won't need 1000w as 750 or 800w would work just as well.I recommend getting one of these:

Corsair : http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-rm750

 EVGA : http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20750xr

Antec : http://pcpartpicker.com/part/antec-power-supply-hcg750m

CM : http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-power-supply-rs750amaab1us

For the best pricing use pcpartpicker it gives you updates on the prices of the parts you choose:  http://pcpartpicker.com/

p.s: That's not a budget build.

Thanks! I actually didn't mention I use pcpartpicker, my mistake there!

I did see a few $110 1000w power supplies. I'm in the process of finalizing a check on http://www.coolermaster.outervision.com/to check the wattage i would be close to, and get 50-100w over to accommodate for changes.

I've had a 4-5 year PC before but it wasn't a gaming rig, I have no doubt i'll probably get a year or two and end up changing something, but i'm working on at least a 2 year build at the least, but i'll probably slowly build another just, well because i can lol.

Thanks for your recommendation though!

Thanks ! I didn't think i would need the 1000w, it was more of a fail-safe recommendation from what i've looked up. But i figured I wanted to get more around a 750-800w since you can get the wrong PSU and screw up the components, and i definitely don't want that.

I did the cooler master site recommendation and another random PSU calc just to see what the recommendations were... so far it hasn't been above 650w to my surprise, even with the dual 970 GPU's so a 700/800 would definitely do the trick!

@XeroCreator you do not need a 100W PSU for Z97 and SLI 970. Get a 750W (850 W if you want to leave yourself of running 2 higher power *coughAMDcough* GPUs in the future). As for suggestions and thoughts:

  1. Do NOT buy an EVGA SuperNOVA NEX PSU. Do buy an EVGA SuperNOVA G2 series
  2. With the regular sales on the EVGA G2, the Corsair RM is overpriced in comparison (most of the time). The G2 also performs better, and has a longer warranty, for when the 2 are at the same price. When the G2 750 or 850 are within $5 or less of their RM counterpart, go with the G2.
  3. With the EVGA G2 750 dropping to $80 or below fairly regularly, it's one of the best value PSUs out there offering 80+ gold efficiency, full modularity, and a semi-fanless mode, not to mention that it's built by Super Flower. You could go cheaper, for a good 750W, you'd still be looking at $50-60, and you'd have to settle for 80+ bronze, a shorter warranty, no fanless mode, and semi-modular at best.
  4. TL;DR wait for the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 750 to drop below $80, or for the SuperNOVA GS 850 to drop below $80.

Titan: Intel Core i7-5820K | ASUS X99-A | Crucial Ballistix Sport 4x4GB DDR4-2400 | ASUS Strix GeForce GTX 970 | OCZ Arc 100 2x256GB in RAID 0 | Seagate Barracuda 2x2TB in RAID 1

EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 | Fractal Design Define R5 Titanium Window | Phanteks PH-TC14PE | ASUS BW-12B1ST

That was supposed to say 'budget for the build' not budget build my bad!
I did actually see that 750w G2, and it wouldn't be bad for what i'm looking at. the 1000w was a starting point, not what i actually wanted.

according to myself and others, i wouldn't need more than 700w even with the 970 SLI (does it make a difference these are the 4gb versions of 970s?).
I appreciate the feedback of course!

Overall this is going to be around 1500 total (maybe more depends on pricing at times i buy things) once i'm done, it's not much less a budget build than a strict price range build. I've priced a few things and so far it's still around 900$ total if I get the correct prices, I'm getting the Processor and Mobo first, and storing them until i get the more expensive pieces of the build, then of course finalizing everything.
I'm actually not using the SLI until most likely summer or later, for now i have a gtx620 2gb card, it sucks, but it's what i'm using to prevent myself spending my entire paycheck on one card.
That being said, the main focus for the build atm is:

4790k Processor > asrock fatal1ty pro Motherboard > 16gb 2x8GB RAM > 1tb HDD > 700-800w PSU

I already have that gpu to use until i'm ready to set up the rest of the build, being the 2 970 4gb in sli, which i'll be buying seperately but, based on the sli performance of the 2 cards together, i can't wait for that.

So, looks like pretty much everything is done, at least as far as deciding on the PSU wattage and brands I should look at.

Everything else guess it's just gonna take time now :)

I originally wanted to get the 760 4gb but, was quickly told the 970 4gb being newer, faster, and around the same price, would be a much better option.
Plus, everyone loves how the cards look!

Any recommendations on versions of the 970?
I've been looking at EVGA and the Asus Strix 970 (it has alot of great reviews about how it has great performance and how quiet it is)

The only thing left is a CPU cooler, which I actually already have that was well, just waiting on getting it in my hands.

For your PSU budget and power needs, the EVGA 750G2 will be perfect.

Don't get the Strix. Get the Gigabyte G1

Yeah, avoid Corsair if you're doing s high end build. Get a good Seasonic or beQuiet. Enermax and EVGA G series are good too.
