Budget - Mid Range AMD based build

So I was planning an AMD build for my brother who don't want to spend a bomb:

CPU - AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor

Mobo - MSI 970 GAMING ATX AM3+ Motherboard

GPU - MSI Radeon R9 280 3GB TWIN FROZR Video Card

MMR - G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

I also planned to include a powerful liquid cooler for overclocking, so I suppose this system would be a pretty decent performer.

Any suggestion to improve on this AMD build without shooting up the price?

Note: If you're going to tell me to switch to Intel, please don't waste your time!

You're blissfully unaware that you're wasting your money, so why can't I correct you?

What's your total budget anyway?

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

I'm going to say this now..

An i3 will outperform an FX 6300 all the time..

Just buy an i3.

The i3 can also stream and record better than the FX-6300 can, because it doesn't take a hit to the CPU using Intel's Quick Sync technology.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

With everyone saying that you should go for an i3, you could also consider the Pentium G3258 because it's cheaper and can be overclocked, they would both out perform the FX-6300 so yeah! just a thought...

Here's a link comparing the two if you want to:

Bro it's cheaper for a reason..

if the pentium is overclocked it can get the same (and better) performance as the FX-6300 and with the 1150 socket it gives a more powerful upgradability in the future for something like an i5 or i7 where-as the am3+ socket would only get up to the 9590..

This video is a pentium G3258 overclocked to 4.3Ghz comparison to the FX-6300 @stock:

And yet a pentium is worse than an i3..

But the i3 4150 compared to the 6300 and the 6350, get's beaten

With all the necessary equipment needed to overclock the pentium, you could get a cheap motherboard and an i3 for the same price.

I agree with waterboy_trick. The Pentium us a good overclocker with people getting to speeds such as 4.7/4.8GHz. This is a lot higher than the FX 6300 while also requiring less power and less cooling. Also if you go for the Pentium G3258 you have the possibility to go to a i5 or i7 in the future when then become cheaper.

The AMD FX 9590 is not as powerful as a intel i7, so if they had the posiibility to go to an i7 or even an i5 they will be better off. Also the Pentium is cheaper being at around £54 where as the FX 6300 is around the £85 - £95 range, same as the i3. For the money you save and the performance you get it is a better choice.

but an i3 is not overclockable and the pentium can get to the 4.5ghz area easily on air, surely you know how good the 212 evo is for it's price so the "necessary equipment" would just be a motherboard that supports overclocking and the 212 evo for not too much money...

An i3 non overclocked results in same performance as OC Pentium.
