Has the CPU fan to be PWM?

Jerombolo

So I have 7 DC fans laing around and I'm going to use them in my new PC. Do the have to be PWM for using them as CPU fans or not? And what would be different if they would be PWM

Well you should have a CPU_FAN header, just put the fan/pump into that then the rest on a molex to 3 pin?

They dont have to, But the motherboard wont be able to tell the RPM so it may be louder.

you dont need the CPU fan to be PWM

PWM will just let it run at speeds below 40%, which would be quieter with a PWM fan

both 3 pin and 4 pin fans have a tachometer...the motherboard will always know the RPM

I think sound won't be such a problem when I use SP quiet fans. Those are laing around and I won't get new ones for 20 each...

corsair fans are not that quiet, but if they are quiet enough for you then yes they will work fine on a 3 pin fan header

And then I'll just use them with a y-splitter

the short answer, No.

But, your computer wont start up probably without something plugged into that fan header.

EDIT: reading words that aren't there

oh and pwm means they are system speed controlled

How do you mean: it won't start up probably. I had to adjust the CPU fan speed alert now with using 2 PWM fans because the run at 500 on idle and the alert was set to 600

the default is if you don't have a fan plugged into the cpu_fan then the system will fail to post (on some they require cpu_fan and Chasis_1) to post as default

it's individual mobo's though

I never said I wouldn't connect a cpu fan...

nope, it will give a warning if there's no tacho signal but that can be configured in the bios, although be carefull with the fans, if they are server fans they can use more amps than the cpu fan header can handle so check that first

EDIT: now i see you're using regular fans that will be fine
