Athlon X4 860K vs. Pentium G3258 vs. i3-4150

Get the i3. The i3 is much better than either the athlon or the g3258. Also with the i3 you would theoretically also have a quad core since the i3,(thanks to hyperthreading) has 4 threads.

Looking into my first gaming build. I don't have the budget to look into a 4690k or something like that.

BUT, I'm leaning toward the Athlon X4 for two reasons, One: I would have a quad core CPU, and Two, I could put a better air or water cooler on that or the G3258.

If I got the i3, I would have to stick with the stock cooler. 

The rest of the planned rig would be:

EVGA GTX 960 (itx SSC)

8GB DDR3 memory.

I already have a 550w PSU (OCing any of the CPUs wouldn't be a problem)

I would be running this on a 1080p 60Hz monitor playing games like TF2, Just cause 2, BF Hardline (When its out of Beta).

I'd get the i3 if I were you. The Athlon is by no means bad, but the single core performance of it is rather poor.

G3258 would have been a fun and very viable option and for what you pay for it you are getting more value than what you get from an i3.  Seriously there are some absurd prices on the G3258 out there.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

The main issue with Athlon is not the single-core performance but rather it's already the highest-end CPU of the socket and you have nothing higher to upgrade to if you find you need more CPU power.

It comes down to preference and what you do.

I would recommend the G3258, It isnt as good at multitasking as the i3 since it doesnt have HyperThreading, But when it comes to gaming performance they have pretty similar performance.

I would rather recommend the FX 4300 than the Athlon 860k, The FX4300 can be upgraded and it has pretty similar performance as the 860k.
And there are also more boards aimed for overclocking for it.
