Free Your PC, Learn Linux, Embrace The Future

Why learn Linux? Because, quite simply, it is the future.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TBRTLsCNXs

I truly believe that Linus and Slick, being sources of knowledge for many in the tech/PC community, should feel not only obligated but that they owe it to them selves and to their audience to start learning Linux. Ignorance will only hold back what is to come. I know LMG is a busy crew and I don't think they're being intentionally ignorant, but rather I don't think they realize the scope and potential of what they're ignoring.

Regardless, the more of us (the members of the community) delve into the world of Linux, the better it will get. :)

Thus, I'll keep on advocating for Linux. Check out the video from Wendell from TekSyndicate. This is just the beginning of a whole video series (they've devoted a YT channel specifically for it) on Linux. He'll be exploring the ins and outs, how to install, what you can do with it, how to diagnose and fix problems, and much more.

Had I the money and space I'd assemble four systems

- Two systems running Windows [7,8.1, perhaps 10] (one having an AMD GPU, the other having an Nvidia)

- Two systems running various Linux Distros ((X)(K)Ubuntu, Mint, debian, mint, fedora, etc) - one having an AMD GPU, and the other having a Nvidia GPU.

I always love trying out linux distros. But it ALWAYS goes like this:

1. Start my install.

2. Be really excited

3. Install takes hours to get working correctly with hardware.

4. All set, but now my excitement level is about 10/100

5. Need to get something done for work, want to play a game, want to do something other than look at the new OS im running.

6. Revert back to windows.

Linux evangelists are the digital equivalent of Jehovah's witnesses.

I use debian at home on my old P4 machine and centOS at work. Though the work machines don't have X or a window manager so it's all terminal via ssh. The best way to learn how to use Linux is simply to use Linux.

I don't know anything about Linux, how it works, how you use it, why you use it, etc, etc, but I can see it being fun to get into that sort of thing instead of just the hardware.

I have a really old rig laying around (early 2000s), so I'm almost considering either wiping that rig, or waiting until I have enough parts accumulated (So far only a Phenom II) that I can redneck a rig together to play with Linux/server hosting, etc. A tutorial series from Linus would be amazing.

Personally I've become a bit of a Linux fan lately.

So Im pretty excited about the teklinux channel

I am at a point in my life where I'm considering ditching windows completely. (Especially after I found out that I have to call ms support to activate win 8.1...)

still want to play games though...

Compatibility has gotten significantly better over the last few years. Partly what helps compatibility improve is getting more people to use it in the first place. ;)

How long ago was the last time you tried and what hardware were you installing it on? In the last year or two, the majority of the more popular distros tend to install easier and faster than windows. Don't get discouraged, it might be something simple that you're missing or doing wrong.

With how easily Linus gets flustered, I would be very amused to see him trying to use a Linux desktop.

Depending on the particular desktop environment he uses, it could be setup very similar to windows or very different. Ultimately they all have the same fundamental components; main menu with apps/programs/options/settings sub-menus, task bar, desktop background etc.

Regardless, I can see Linus getting flustered about a few things in Linux. :P

Funny, because only ~16/100+ games have support.

And I refuse to not play this in borderless full screen. Which means no VMs.

Actually I don't remember where I saw that. Care to correct?

I would totally dual boot for a bit to see if I like Linux/playing games on a VM.

Would still be cooler to have native support like windows does though >_>

I know for a fact that you can run windows games in a VM just like you would on a native windows machine.

The alternative to dual-booting just to run your windows games is to install Linux as your native OS and install windows in KVM and use PCIe passthrough to your main GPU. Not only will windows actually run better and faster this way (for various reasons) but some games may also run better and faster. Part of the reason for this is because Linux uses a faster and more efficient file structure system vs. windows and windows (in the VM) actually uses the Linux file system. There are also a number of processes that no longer need to run in windows in the VM, which also frees up more system resources, potentially increasing performance even more. This method also makes taking snapshots and restoring the windows VM to a previous backup point much easier than using the windows own restore methods. And, because windows is contained within a VM, there is still virtually no risk of viruses or malware or any of that. If your windows VM becomes infected, it is contained within the VM and can simply be restored to a previous snapshot (prior to infection), completely eliminating the malicious software.

People often like to focus on what Linux can't do, but what they don't realize is that Linux can actually do everything windows can and much much more. It is the only OS that can truly unlock the full capabilities of your hardware.

ReactOS NT, BSD and Darwin are open and free too.

ReactOS is windows based and still in development. Will have to wait and see if it has the inherent issues and inefficiencies as the mainstream versions of windows.

Never heard of BSD. Darwin and Solaris are both Unix-based.

I honestly don't know enough about any of those to comment on them. But I do know enough about Linux to say that it is just awesome. The possibilities are endless and the benefits are extensive.

Fair enough, but Linux has far more distros, but reactOS is in alpha and the latest version of BSD is 20 years old.

Are you sure? Check DragonflyBSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and ArchBSD projects.

Yes, I'm sure, BSD itself hasn't been updated in 20 years whereas Linux was updated 22 hours ago.

Linux Kernel is to Android, Embedded and all other GNU/Linux distro's out there what Darwin is MacOSX (Yes the MacOSX Kernel is open source  -- look it up) & BSD. Thanks to Gabe@Steam games are coming to Linux machines. As a person who runs multiple linux machines (My daily laptop runs ArchLinux). The only problem with linux is hardware drivers for gaming. AMD despite committing to an open source driver 4 years ago did not deliver. NVIDIA (thou recently their drivers work better than AMD's) have failed to maintain a consistent driver.

Linux in my opinion is this.

It's a car you build. If you want it to be F1 racer or the family minivan its your choice. But then you cannot buy a  new front end for a FORD and expect it to just work with out you tinkering with it. But we here are mostly enthusiast. If not us then who will use it. But i guess its different stores for different folks. I've seen a lot linux users on our forums. 5 years ago that was not the case.

Linux has taken the lead in almost all other aspects of computing except what is was originally intended for - The Desktop. Oh the Irony (cue. Alanis Morissette) :)

When Linux gaming has reached a point where there are lots of AAA title games ported or made for it (exclusive?) we will see the community grow tremendously. I believe this is honestly the only obstacle Linux has that prevents it from becoming well known and used.

Linux evangelists are the digital equivalent of Jehovah's witnesses.

I use debian at home on my old P4 machine and centOS at work. Though the work machines don't have X or a window manager so it's all terminal via ssh. The best way to learn how to use Linux is simply to use Linux.

It really is the best way. If that isn't enough, engaging the Linux community even for thirty minutes a day could help too. Honestly though putting the disc in, installing and just messing around is usually enough to learn how to use it. People just look at Linux and think it requires being a rocket scientist to actually use...it doesn't. It is incredibly easy to use. And this is coming from an idiot, so there's that.
