About 60 FPS

Nit3Rid3R

Before anyone says anything, this isn't an argument between 30, 60 and 120FPS etc, this is merely a discussion on 60FPS gaming/gameplay.

So lets get started.

60fps gaming isn't new, we've had it for a long time, and it's great and all, but with the "recent" youtube update to allow 60FPS playback, there's something that I have noticed with it. Whenever I play any of my games at 60fps or beyond, they never truly look as smooth as what I see in videos or in webm's. And the reason I bring this up is because I was watching some guy on twitch stream Cities Skylines, and I noticed something about the smoothness of 60fps stream that has never happened to me before in any other videos or playing games, I was suddenly getting dizzy from the smoothness of it.

So then I started noticing something which before getting dizzy this one time, I have never noticed before. The gaming experience of 60fps and the viewing experience of the same game, are 2 different things. Now, I know it's always been different and such, but I just find it funny that I have only just noticed this difference in the smoothness of the gameplay. Because whenever I play any games at above 60fps, they never look as smooth as any video, and it's now starting to bug me.

I don't know if any of you guys are seeing the same thing I see, maybe some of you can see the butter smoothness that you see when viewing 60fps gamepla, maybe some of you don't. And I honestly don't fully understand what is happening as to why I can't really see the same smoothness, I read online (lets be serious, it was on reddit) that this is because when you are playing the game, you don't notice it, you are "busy" perceiving other things that are currently going on, as to when you are viewing someone doing the same task, the butter smoothness is much more apparent. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that I don't notice the difference between 30 and 60 fps, I am saying that I don't see the same butter smoothness that videos/streams/webms deliver.

If you don't know the butter smoothness I am talking about, then I redirect you to the r/60fpsGamingGifs/ on reddit, that's the butter smoothness I am talking about. (Not sure how to make wembs auto play here)

TL;DR: Can't see the butter smoothness of 60fps gameplay in videos/streams/webms compared to playing it yourself.

But yeah, those are my thoughts, just wanted to throw this out there and see what other people think about this subject.

Don't get dizzy from it..

There's no anomalies in videos.

You have to consider stuttering, frame timing, etc in real time rendering; that's my hypothesis.

Oh between 30 and 60 for sure, there's a huge difference, but I am talking about between a videos 60 FPS and your own games 60FPS.

I guess it's just because 60fps games, which are models and all that, don't really look the same as a real person in a video that is 60fps.

One problem with lower FPS video that makes me nauseous, is when you have a camera panning around, and the mid to far objects are not moving smoothly, but twitch across the screen. as fps increases, background objects move more smoothly, and my urge to vomit decreases. oddly enough, this is only when watching video or gameplay. I can play some games (need for speed as an example) at 30 fps and it looks just fine, but that could be some kind of frame blending happening I am unaware of, or just really good frame times.

Streamers who can stream at 60fps have one super rig or two rigs (one streaming, one gaming) so they never dip under 60fps. Your PC probably does.

I always notice 60fps content on twitch,YouTube or when I game at 1080p.

I don't watch twitch in full screen.

However I admit that some games are very weird to look at when u watch them at 60fps. It's super smooth but fact that someone else controls the game character running around did make me uncomfortable once. Can't remember which game it was.

Another factor to this that I think a lot of people overlook is the monitor! I have an IPS 60 hz display, which has decent response time (5 ms I think), but does have some LED blurring. Many people see this as a downside for gaming, but for me it makes 30 fps look a lot smoother and doesn't give 60 fps a lot of advantage. The result is I would rather crank up my image quality in games than hold 60 fps all the time, as long as my image is smooth and pretty I'm happy.

If you get sick, prefer 60 to 30, or just can't tell the difference... it could all vary from person to person depending on your display as well as your eyes.

That's what I thought about it.  As well as games handling fluidity differently.  If you flail your mouse around to look, it will be choppy and stuttery. If you move more measured like how a thumbstick moves, I haven't had choppiness problems.

Sounds similar to the soap opera effect on the 60fps videos of the game.

I feel like its because what your used to. Like your used to your gameplay being 60, so your used to it. videos at 60 fps is a new thing, so Its unusual to watch something so smooth.

My dads 400hp mustang feels fast, and is, but the accelration in my buddies 300 HP gtp is amazing, and feels faster, even though I know its slower. Its because the mustang handles the speed faster, it was built for that. the gtp? its been modified. it screams a whole lot more, and is a lot more then just stomping your foot to the floor.

I guess it all depends on what your used to

Like MegaDave91 mentioned, it's all about consistency. A 60 FPS Youtube video will be displayed at a rock-solid consistent 60 FPS, with absolutely no runt frames, microstutters, or any other tiny (usually unnoticeable) issue.

Most of the time when people say they run a game at "60 FPS", they usually meant that they're running the game at roughly 60 FPS, and the game actually runs anywhere between 55 and 70 FPS. Any little fluctuation will cause some loss of smoothness. If you were to lock a game to a solid 60 (never even dipping to 59, and never raising to 61), it would most likely feel just as smooth as a prerecorded 60 FPS video.

The problem is that you're not in control of what's going on in a video.

When you play a game, you know how you will react and not get dizzy.

Is the same reason that makes some people get dizzy in cars if they are not the ones driving it.

This basically. It's motion sickness, caused by you not knowing in advance how the camera angle will change next.

I play World of Tanks in 80fps Max setting with motion effects. I used my friend's pc at the same settings. 30-40fps. The motion effects lag the entire game and aiming accuracy. The bottom line is 60fps for wot while turning turret and aiming very quickly. You'll feel the difference especially with drawing and texture.

Try changing the FoV (Field of Vieuw) in the game folder, some people get "sick" if they dont, because it looks more 3D that way.

My guess is a lot of times your browser doesn't render things at 60 fps properly, from what I've noticed at least this seems to be common.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch
