SLI 970 or SLI 780?

Callump01

Hey guys,

I'm still undecided on dropping a load of cash to upgrade to my first SLI configuration, I recently put in a Corsair RM 1000W PSU in and I'm torn between SLI G1 GTX 970's or buying one more MSI GTX 780 to go with my current card.

I would pick 970 in a heartbeat due to the much lower temps and power consumption, however the 3.5GB nonsense is giving me doubts. I've heard that the 3.5GB VRAM issue with these cards gets alot worse when run in SLI configurations and will get even worse once DirectX 12 is released.

What are your inputs on this? Cheers.

Yeah I would go with a 970 because of Power consumption and it is a kick ass card xD

Edit: I wouldnt worry too much about the whole 3.5GB VRAM thing, its not really that big of a problem, oh and what sort of resolution will you be playing at?

If you already have a 780, i would definitely recommend getting another one as opposed to 970 SLI

970s.

More efficient, more powerful, newer, all that shit.

Keep in mind the 780 only had 3GB of VRAM, and I have had no problem with the slower .5GB of VRAM with my GTX 970, hell, I've used DSR to crank the resolution up to 4x on my 1680x1050 monitor and still didn't go over 3GB or so of VRAM used in world of tanks or skyrim. (at least from what I can remember, but I didn't have any issues with it for sure)

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

If you already have a 780, it doesnt make much sense to buy two 970s. Add another 780! :D

Personally i would just grab a second 780, its probably going to save you a fair bit of cash and with a 1000 watt psu you have more then enough juice, Ive been running a pair of heavily overclocked 780's on an 850 watt psu for just over a year now without issue.

As for the 970's Its a fairly hit and miss thing with vram issues in my experience. two friends systems run amazing with the sli 970's on 5760x1080p setups while my cousins system on the same resolution stutters like mad :/ Personally i dont think its worth the gamble if you already have a 780 in your system anyway

If you have a 780, you won't get a huge performance jump from going to a 980. The same holds true for sli. Get another 780, and wait for a new hardware generation to jump to. The 970's aren't really a worthwhile upgrade.

Then its a no brainer to go with a 2nd 780.

I have had my 970 up to 3.7GB on Dying Light at 1080p with stellar performance, no stutter or anything. Though now with newer patches Dying Light is now needing about 2.8GB on higher settings.

I'm just worried about temps if I get a 780 - on maximum load my card already runs at 75-80c and adding another would surely put that in the danger zone?

I have a CM 690 III case with a top 200mm exhaust fan, back 140mm exhaust fan and front 200mm intake fan.

Blargh.

Maybe get a different case that is more airflow optimized?

Definitely something I am considering.

What about the stuttering people are reporting specifically with SLI 970's @ 1440p, is it a major problem? I've heard two 970's are awful once you pass 3.5gb.

Can anyone with SLI 970's gimme' some feedback?  :)

Cheers!

I may not have 2x GTX 970s, but I do have one.

For the most part, the people that are going over 3.5GB at 1440p are the ones that have shitloads of graphical enhancers, and have all their settings cranked up all the way (including AA and that one other thing that I keep forgetting that isn't really needed at higher resolutions)

OP, if you already have a 780, then the choice is plain simple. Get another one.

Buying 2 new 970s will be a complete waste
