WQHD at 144hz or 4k at 60hz

Me_I_Guess

Would you guys please give me your views on refresh rate importance to image quality.  I have never played on anything above 60hz 1080p, but now have a system that could handle much more and am wondering if WQHD at 144hz would be a more pleasurable gaming experience than UHD at 60hz.

From what I have read it seems competitive gamers like higher hz for a more accurate/faster image to help them react.  Is this the whole story or am I missing something?

I would like the best, laid back experience playing games and am not interested in competitive gaming, so I would imagine 4k at 60hz would fit me best.  Please let me know your opinions and suggestions as I would like to know as much as possible from more seasoned gamers before I drop $600 on a new monitor.  I will be getting a freesync monitor by the way.

System spec if needed  :)

I7 4790K

290X x 2

16g 2166 ram

Asus max hero MB

I play recent releases, FPS games as well as Skyrim and diablo 3.  In case the type of game makes a difference when choosing a monitor.

Cheers for the help!

WQHD at 144hz will blow your mind if you've been playing 1080 @ 60. I'd get a monitor like the ROG Swift.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

Thank you very much for replying and giving your suggestions.

Is there a store where you can test out monitors?  I live in the US but am English and don't know the stores well at all.  I have tried best buy, but their selection was small and only a couple of 1080 monitors were set up.

Also, the general consensus I have seen online is that 144hz only really comes into its own playing lots of FPS.  Do you, MRE Tech and dadasmithywinkle, mostly play FPS games on a 144hz monitor or do you feel 144hz is better all round?  If so, why?
