A 5930K will go unused, not to mention even the cheap LGA 2011-3 board are $200 and the price premium on DDR4, you could buy a much more powerful GPU for the extra spent to go LGA 2011-3. I'd recommended getting a 4690K and a nice board.

yes the 4690k is better value for the most people but the xeon e31231v3 goes for the same price but with hyperthreading. cpus are not really "bottlenecking" or anything like this and it is nice to know you have 8 threads to use if a game utilizes it. overclocking is not as effective anymore. not on the cpu.. gpu is getting better results in my opinion

Need wayyy more information. Are you going to be jamming 3–4 video cards in this machine or something? Are you going to be doing anything with it other than gaming?

 

If this is going to be an ordinary gaming PC with a single video card, just get either the i5-4690K or i7-4790K. If you must go with X99 for some reason, the i7-5820K is already overkill.

while the 4690k is all thats necessary to run any game, I would get an i7 4790k. Is it overkill for games? Yes. Will it allow you to expand into other fields later on such as video production? yes. One thing i always take into consideration is "what if i decide i want more later on." The roughly $100 USD extra for that i7 is a lot less than buying a second cpu later on if you decide to expand or just want more.

i5 4690k all you need but for future expansion if you decide to do rendering or something else then for 100$ more the i7 is the better choice.

You'll still lose money on it, and they can be tough to sell, I've tried. If you have friends or colleagues that you're fairly certain would buy it then go ahead and sell it, but an extraa $100 now can save a lot of hassle later on in my experiences

i7-4790K is the ultimate gaming CPU regardless of what the teens in the i5 bandwagon are saying...most games do use more than 4 threads nowadays and the core i5 is seeing very high usage and core are pinned in many of the latest AAA titles...for future-proofing purposes and better gaming experience in the long run if you can afford the i7-4790K without cheaping out on your GPU then by all means go for it IMHO it's worth every penny...especialy if you do not upgrade your CPU often, the i7-4790K has more cache, faster clockspeed and more threads...anything more than that would be overkill for gaming though.

Keep in mind though, the i5 is still a fantastic chip for video editing and recording.  You only really need the i7 if you need those videos to render faster, and for the average consumer, the i5 keeps up pretty well.

I'm not saying that...  It's just that people underestimate its performance.  Go for the i7 if you can afford it, it's a wonderful CPU.

Don't get me wrong the i5-4690K is a fantastic chip and an awesome value for a gamer...but clearly the OP isnt so tight on cash since he was looking at the i7-5930K...that means he can more than likely afford the i7-4790K which is a much stronger part that will remain relevant in a higher-end gaming rig for a much longer period of time...again as i said it being a chip that can handle nearly twice the workload, twice the thread count and comes with more cache and is binned to reach higher frequencies.

oh absolutely.  tbh if I was in the market for a desktop (I'm on the go a lot, have no time for a desktop) I'd definitely go for the 4790k.
