Net neutrality is not for Europe

topic_net-neutrality.png?itok=4Akz2E3N

Hey Europe, wanna stop being so backwards and get with the consumer friendly program of what net neutrality should be? That would be nice.

Giving ISPs the freedom to offer two tiers is going to ASSURE that they offer two tiers and hold both consumers and business like Google and Netflix by the balls for payments. This affects everyone. Consumers over there already enjoy speedy internet access on the cheap, but these rules would make corporations pay more just to have the proper speeds they need to deliver their content, on top of the fact that they need to pay for pipelines in the first place.

The Financial Times reported Wednesday that E.U. member states are drawing up proposals that would allow telecoms groups to prioritize certain services to ensure that the network worked properly, in stark contrast to a ruling by the Federal Communications Commission that will effectively ban differentiating the speed of services.

The draft reflects, among other things, the greater lobbying power in the E.U. of the big European telecoms companies that run mobile networks, relative to the (largely U.S.) tech companies that fill those networks with ever more data.

The FT noted that, at this week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the CEOs of both Vodafone Plc  VOD 0.23% and Deutsche Telekom AG  DTEGY 1.54%  both argued for rules that would allow them to give priority to specific ‘essential’ services, like those connected to hospitals or driverless cars.

The proposals, drafted by the Latvian government that currently holds the E.U.’s rotating presidency, still insist on a basic principle of treating all traffic equally, but allow network operators to be “free to enter into agreements” to deliver faster speeds at higher prices.

Don't lump all of us in with those blue and yellow bastards. Not talking about Sweden of course, though they are different kind of bastards* :P

*This is how Norwegians and Swedes interact in a friendly joking manner, no racism intended for anyone used to hypersensitive inflamed neighbor countries and political correctness. Example; Why do Swedes like to bring a car door to the desert? So they can roll down the window when it gets hot. Why is the Swede crawling on the floor at the super market? He's looking for the low prices. How do you sink a Swedish submarine? You swim down and knock on the hatch. How do you sink a Swedish submarine again? You repeat the previous step, and the Swedes will open to explain that "we aren't falling for that one again!" How does a Swede's brain cell die? Alone. What does Sweden have that Norway doesn't? Good neighbors. etc etc ad infinitum longest footnote ever bye

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

FUCKING GODDAMMIT!!!!!!!!

We in the Netherlands have NN as far as I know, but this EU ruling could over turn that i think. Why must they do this....

I like the EU and think it offers many advantages, but this this right here shows why it sometimes really is quite bad.

Keep in mind that we (at least in Germany) have the vibrant ISP market with lots of competition, so NN, even though I find it necessary to exist, is not as big of a deal here as in the US.

You say we're behind? Sry couldn't hear that over the 50 Mbit/s @ 20€ that I enjoy.

I rarely watch T.V, but the other day  I did.  I saw an ad for  iinet telling everyone how romania had faster net than us and that is why we need to do X buy Y and etc etc.  It's no wonder people are confused about the implications of NN and reasons why some countries have faster net than others.    A simply map of an area with consumer demographics will show pretty quickly why countries like south korea, japan and romania can have faster internet.  Internet speeds have nothing to do with NN, they have very little to do with government spending.  The people pay for everything, the people pay taxes, bills, levy's, fees licenses etc. this money in turn provides the services.  If a country has a high density population then the area of infrastructure is small compared to the relative consumer base. ergo faster net.  Australia on the other hand has 1/10 the population of the US spread across almost 60% the same are.

So long story short, not allowing NN is bad regardless of internet speed/infrastructure, comparing one countries internet to another is deeply flawed.

Edited for typo.

And this one of the many reasons the UK should drop out of UK

So Scotland, Ireland and England (GB?) should split and beceome their own nations (again?)? I do think you meant EU lol.

Not going to happen as this is illegal in many EU countries for years now.

Also saying Europe is more backwards when it comes to net neutrality is also way overstated when countries like Germany not only have net neutrality but also allow locals to make their own ISPs unlike the US.

Yeah, cause the Net neutrality rule in US (instituted by the FCC and opposed by plenty of people in congress) was totally the result of the people's will and not lobbying by Google and other online service companies.

Politicians are corrupt and don't care about what their electorate wants, much less if some Canadian is going to be sassy at them on the internet.

It's not like the EU controls every country entirely here like in the US, we're countries for that reason, not states. Internet is different in each country as far as i can tell.

I'm sorry, what? I can't hear you over my fast, unlimited internet access.

Sweden has had multiple ISP for years and we can get e.g. a 10MB connection for less than $20/month, in places as small as 3000 people. When US can say they have the same, let's say in any state, let alone the whole country, get back to us.

EDIT: Also, I liked the OP, just so I could unlike it.

Would love to move to Sweden but its way up the north and I don't like the language.

So sad :( But technologywise Sweden is the best out of all Union countries right ?
