Windows 8/8.1: Hate explanation?

EmeraldKiwi

So after a few years of having a PC, I've noticed that no matter who you talk to, almost everyone will say they hate windows 8. Can anyone provide an article explaining why? I've looked already, but I just don't understand why everyone seems to hate on windows 8. Of course it didn't do very well, and many changes were apparently for the worse, but I have yet to find any specific reasons why nobody likes it. The reason I'm asking is because I've used windows 7 and still currently am, but I'm considering trying windows 8 for the slight performance boost and the fantastic aesthetics. Any insight here would be appreciated. Many thanks.

People don't like change, and Windows 8 changed a lot. I honestly want to drop kick Windows 7 and get rid of it since Windows 8.1 is better all around.

People have different opinions and hate the metro UI (AKA the start screen) stuff.

I don't hate that (Or Windows 8 in general.) I like W8 :)

For my personally it was that i felt lost, things weren't where i had always known them to be and it seemed like a lot of changes happened for no good reason at all. In my mind there is nothing wrong with them bringing out a new version of Windows without changing the look/functionality much.

They should have listened to the people that tested it, they got a lot of negative feedback it was loud and clear, they were arrogant and ignored it though.

People in general just don't like change, the lack of a start button and the metro interface made people hate it.

Starting I hate Windows 8 to the core. But I've used to it for two years. Pretty much got use to it. Now in Windows 8.1, definitely a lighter OS than Windows 7. I'm quite skeptical about the Windows 10 tho.

I hated windows 8 but i like windows 8.1 and i know alot of people on this forum like it too. I think most of the hate came from before 8.1 was released but now i think alot of people (like me) like it. You should update, just keep in mind win10 is around the corner so you might have to reinstall everything again.

Metro apps suck for a desktop.

Until 8.1 they didn't allowed boot to desktop which confused a lot of people (particularly non-techie) as it made it seem like everything was centralized around metro.

Some programs had metro counterparts (Internet Explorer) which is also confusing since (again, non-techies) couldn't differentiate how to open which.

There was no smooth transition into the metro interface, no other Windows OS had this style before.

The OS was also highly designed around the touch interface and this left keyboard and mouse users annoyed as it didn't really fit into their daily use of a pc.

When I first used it there wasn't a huge amount of support for programs and it was horrible to get used to.

People just preferred to stay with 7, though when 8.1 hit I think a large amount of people moved into the OS as it brought some fixes and updates to the table.

I still use a start menu to this day lol

People don't like the interface since it has changed and is moslty for touch. They had also taken some major features away.If you want to upgrade to windows 8/8.1 then i would recommend installing start is back since it changes the start the interface and brings back the start button.

mostly because the UI, and they didn't even bother to add option.

when you use same interface (or at least similar) to what you use for years, and they decide to change it, ofcourse someone will point that out

people learn to maximize their productivity learning the UI that hasn't changed radically and finally grasp the basic function of each setting.

even linux trying implement the desktop environment into their release.

at first it took me almost half an hour just to find " WHERE IS THE FRICKIN CONTROL PANEL"

as a techies, I'm dealing with so much ignorant people who thinks the problem will solve if they "turn it off and on again"

there's just so many things hidden with those multi layer UI (metro, desktop, desktop metro)

and what if they changed the UI to something "new, better, and refresh" again?

I don't have problem using it, I have problem when someone ask me to solve their problem when using it.

The thing that keeps me away from Windows 8(.1) is the fugly flat theme, and the fact that at random times something (settings mostly) GIVE ME A DAMN FULLSCREEN PIECE OF !@#$

Removal of the start button in the left corner, that now brings you into Metro, which is basically an entirely new interface, you have to rub your mouse on the right hand side of the screen in order to have charms appear, just so you can turn off your PC, go into control panel or basically go into anything. Also any Metro app opens in fullscreen, and they stay open unless you move your mouse to the top left, and left click and choose close.

As others have said;

Windows 8 (On Release) was another slap in the face to a lot of people. However; Windows 8 on release is a lot different from how it is today. I personally cannot comprehend a reason why a non-tablet user would use tiles in day-to-day usage or how someone would want a full screen only Skype that drops calls if you tabbed out of it to browse the web or clicked a link from Skype.

As of today I can easily say it's the superior system. As with Classic Shell or Start8 you can easily get things back to normal, disable all the tablet Garbage, and have a minorly superior Operating System. The only problem is; if you already have Windows 7 I wouldn't say the $100 is worth it; especially now that Microsoft plans to give Windows 10 to Windows 7 Keys.

I never understood that hate, I had 8 on release, I watched a 4 min youtube video released by Microsoft pointing out the differences.

I've never struggled to find anything, I never understood people how said stuff isn't where is was either the metro/start screen has the same search that has been in since vista which I've been using since vista and it works better. You press the start button on your keyboard and then start typing what you want to find and it finds it...

Windows 8 at release was a little too touch-centric but they fixed that fairly quickly and you could always get all the setting up with keyboard short-cuts that are listed in the help.

Windows 8.1 fixed every complaint about 8 that I could sympathise with.

Bare in mind Windows 10 will only be free as an upgrade, you won't be able to do a clean install from the free edition. At this point I'd say wait for 10, maybe try the tech preview (though don't expect everything to work perfectly). I will be buying 10 not using the free one as I want to clean build it, I've never trusted in-place upgrades.
