Air cooling acceptable on 4790k with no OC?

Virtual01

Asking because in pretty much every single build I see, people choose a water cooler for the 4790k. Is this just personal preference or does it really need the extra cooling help? If I air cool, I plan on getting a beefy high end cooler if that makes a difference.

If you have the budget for a higher end AIO, do it. Otherwise, might as well just go with something else on the air cooler side.

Ugh.... The difference btw AIO liquid cooler and air coolers is very minimal + air coolers mostly tend to be a bit quieter due to no pump. IMO its not worth the price difference between those 2.

Its mostly preference, if you don't OC it you can get something like a Hyper 212 Evo and be fine, otherwise you can spend a little more and get something that looks nicer.

With no OC you may as well use the stock cooler.

The 3 best (Be Quiet, Noctua, Phanteks) dual tower air coolers will cool enough for an aggressive overclock and water is not really necessary.

Some people do it for aesthetic reasons (go figure) also some seem to think heavy air coolers are detrimental to the motherboard which they aren't. Many deep-rooted misconceptions out and about.

Good watercooling will of course cool even better than the top-end air coolers, but not enough to push your overclock higher or extend the life of any components, so it's pretty much excessive. Watercooling also means more noise.

One benefit of watercooling though is better compatibility with idiotically designed (tall) RAM with fake "heatsinks" that the kids buy.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

You can use your stock cooler, but if you want better cooling so it's not closer to it's thermal limits under heavy load you can go with an evo 212.

It was more for asking how hot the CPU gets out of the box. Of course you CAN cool it with the stock cooler, but whether or not you SHOULD is the important question. If I buy one I'll probably go for a moderate OC.

Any cooler that can keep it under your preference temp is the one to go for :)

My preference Intel CPU temp is 75*c, so I make my fan curves and such suit that target, it could go higher and be fine, but thats up to me :)

To be honest, any cooler can cool a non-overclocked i7 just fine under the TJmax, but its personal preference to do better.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

They usually go with a water cooling solution, because they have big plans for such an expensive processor.

If not overclocking, no cooler will make a difference.
