Curious As To Emulation Threads On The Forum

GodSpoon

Didn't seem like there was any specific rules for or against emulation, would I be fine to start a thread on console and old pc emulators/sources and roms/sources as well as my own work?

The ROM sources would be against the Code of Conduct due to them being pirated content most likely.

Ah but this is under the assumption you own the games you'd be using the backups of, not pirated content at all

This still be allowed by the CoC?

@Slick what do you think?

Isn't it still illegal to pirate things you own anyway?

Sure it is. But emulation is in grey are. You would need to own both games and ROM for it to be completely legal. Then there is games and consoled that have stopped from existing over 25 years ago (early 90s) which makes them free anyway.

Emulator gamers usually justify their gaming (@LinusTech and @Slick too) by saying that they do own consoles and games but still use someone else's ROM and/or games.

Exactly, its just a very muddy line

There isn't any specific ground to stand for or against it, I was just curious as to how the rules would apply here

I think it should be fine if you are posting about ROMs that you made from your own Carts/discs? Kind of like putting your DVD library on your home server, or something like that... I don't know for sure though. You could try PMing linus or slick, and see what they think...

Morally yes, it is a a grey area. I think it's fine to do, and unless the dev bothers to port their game over to this platform at an appropriate price then I'm going to do it. Legally speaking it's not a grey area though. It's just illegal, and that's why things like ROMs cannot be linked on the forum.

To add. In general, I think that using emulators and/or "torrents" to play games that aren't available legally anymore is completely ok. IF you own the original already. That way you aren't taking anything away from devs. That being  said, it makes retro gaming and discovering new old games more in the said grey area.

Even if you don't own the game I don't think it's necessarily bad. Take Pokemon Blue for example. If I want to play that now, I can buy a second-hand console, and a second-hand game, which may have a dead battery. It's a lot of money, maybe some effort to replace the battery in the cartridge, and the devs see none of that money away. Even if you can manage to secure a new copy, the (probable) low selling price, combines with the fact that the game would barely sell probably makes your contribution completely insignificant anyway.

If it's abandonware then you aren't taking from the devs anyway.
