Can you hear a difference? M8 vs M9 sound test, speakers

Guest

The first one to be played is the M8, the second the M9.

OF course it's a video and you need to have them both in real life, but just saying....

I can hear a tiny bit of difference, but I don't know what it is.

I can hear a difference, the m9 sounds a bit more clear or something..... but not to a significant degree of course.

M9 has more pronounced mid and high range or the sound just carries better to the mic. Either way this vid is kinda pointless :P

M8 sounds more 'boomed up' to me..

Either way, it was recorded with another phone (I think?) and uploaded to YouTube, so you can't exactly hear it clear :P

Hmm... you're right, now that you mention it, it does seem to have more power in it. Very slightly.

M8 seems to have more bass than M9 too.

Playing that through my Bose speakers, the M9 sounds to me like it has cleaner lows. The M8 sounds like the lows are sloppy and that it bleeds into/drowns out/distorts the mids a little.

My hearing is perfect but I have no audio knowledge, thank you for clearing things up. (get it? clear...)

I'd wager there's too much manufacturing tolerance to conclusively say one model is better than the other. You could test individual phones all day long but I don't see the point.

I think this thread is interesting to look at how people perceive sound. While there is no bass at all in the recording, people described the louder midrange as "boom" and some concluded that the M8 had more bass; the lack of true bass caused the midrange to be mentally remapped to the bass range. People also interpreted the relatively higher midrange of the M8 as "sloppy" while the higher treble of the M9 was described as "more clear" with "cleaner lows".

I point this out as a reminder to the regulars to be precise when you describe sound as the jargon gets confused really quickly.

Who cares about the bloody speakers?! It really annoys me how nobody ever talks about the audio quality of smartphones when listening to them with your headphones. This needs to become a thing! Not some speaker bullshit.

who cares...

We do though...I would hazard a guess that at least most of us understand that the iPhone and the M8 are in a class of their own in terms of audio in phones. We've been through this multiple times.

The speakers are important because sometimes *shock* we consume media without our headphones on, like for example in bed.  There's nothing wrong with having a nice speaker on a phone.

Tyler had a chart about it somewhere, THD was the lowest on those two phones, the amp is also stronger on at least the M8.

Can you remember how high the THD was on other phones?

No, not through a youtube video made with a handycam played by speakers which are not the native ones. That's both recording tolerances, compression and alterations by the playback of my speakerset.

As SSL pointed out, it's interesting to see how people are trying though.
