SSD Raid Intel or Samsung?

I am currently using a Intel 520 Series 120GB drive as my boot partition and was looking to upgrade to a RAID 0 setup but I'm not too sure which SSD to go with.

I am looking at the following options(and their prices here):

Intel 530 Series 240GB              $199

Intel 730 Series 240GB              $269

Samsung 850 EVO 240GB        $199

All drives come with a 5 year local warranty.

I'm running a Z77 Sabertooth with an 3570K @4.4GHz if you guys need to know.

Please advise me on what to do ^^

Thanks

The 850 EVO isn't $200..

I would go with the 850 EVOs though

You can get them on Newegg for $125

Raid 0 is for speed right?

Why would you get a drive of higher capacity? Get the same capacity for cheaper?

Raid 0 is for storage+speed I'm gucci.

RAID 0 combines the two drives' capacity and around doubles the speed.

Linus did a video on SSD raid, and he recommended using the Intel 730 series because of their stability and performance consistency.  The 730 series is a consumer version of their enterprise series SSDs, so you are getting extra value in terms of stability/consistency/reliability.  They are also the only consumer SSDs to provide proper power loss protection (it's rare, but it can brick your drive if you dont have it.  It happened to my OCZ Vector).

My vote is intel 730.

Yeah, but he'll lose some capacity if he uses a 120GB and a 240GB drive in Raid0.

It is only possible to fill up two drives of the same capacity equaly. When the 120GB drive is full, then the other one is, too.

raid 0 doesnt have redundancy. that's raid 1.

Yeah, almost

Always buy drives of the same capacity and if possible even the same brand or model for RAID.

But actually I find RAID for normal usage not practical. Too many problems.

raid 0 doesnt have redundancy. that's raid 1.

He'll still lose capacity. If you put let's say a 100GB and a 200GB in Raid0, then the data gets split up equaly.

So, if you wright let's say a 200GB file on those drives, the Data will get split into two 100GB parts, which means the first drive is already full and the other on only to 1/2. But if the first drive gets full, then you can not simply use the last remaining 100GB of the 2nd drive to put additional data on. The Raid config will tell you both drives are full.

Linus has said he only accepts sponsors and says what he actually thinks if he thinks the product is good.

Good point!

And I missed the part of OP where he said he already has a 520 ssd.  in that case, he either needs to buy another 520, or get two of something new.  Don't mix drives for raid!

Yeah, mixing drives for RAID should theoretically work, but it just isn't a good idea.

My current 520 is almost 3 years old and it is kinda hard to find parts from that time period now because here in Singapore, the enthusiast market is not that developed so its hard to find old hardware

Intel, they are very consistent in speed, which is good in raid because the speed is based off the slower drive.

Also, @TimelessTranquility , be sure to follow your topics. :)
