Why do I want to upgrade my video card?

b1aze

So for some odd reason, I have an urge to want to pick up a GTX 970 or R9 290X to replace my ASUS GTX 750 Ti.

I literally ONLY play CS;GO on my machine and it runs perfectly fine. I get 160-200 frames in almost all situations and i never see any tearing on my 144hz monitor. I have no logical reason to NEED to upgrade my card but for some strange reason, I find myself putting a card into a NewEgg shopping cart and getting ||<-- that close to clicking "purchase."

Y i do dis?

The struggles of being a PC enthusiast. I have the urge to move to X99 with a 5930K, but it would not be worth the cost. I keep telling myself not to do it.

I just honestly dont have time for other games and nothing piques my interest like CS:GO does. I have yet to find another game with such a high skill ceiling that drives me to want to be better. I am also super competitive so theres that too.

Insurgency has a high skill ceiling :D

I kind of equate it to modifying cars. I have owned my share of cool cars and always found myself making "improvements" that weren't at all necessary but either made it look cooler or go faster, not that I needed either in any sense of the word. There just seems to be a sense of satisfaction with knowing you have a cool machine that runs well.

I have that urge all the time to upgrade but most of the time I come to my senses. Don't bother upgrading if you only play CS-GO. I remember the times when CS beta 3 came out over 15 years ago and I was playing on a 56k modem, lol that was fun.

I try to justify that "If i can get a good deal on it, its worth it!" so i go to PCPart every morning and see if anything is on a historical low price :P I missed a chance with a VisionTek R9 290X the other day for like 289 WITH BACKPLATE! I almost kicked myself.

so? I have friends that are married and have kids and play many games and even run their own review sits and forums and stuff

just instead of playing cs:go 7 days a week, play it for 2 days a week and suddenly you have 5 days free to play other stuff :D

I've got an urge to pick up a 970 when in reality I could do without it for the rest of the year at least, and by the time I did need it I could probably have got something better had I put the money aside and waited.

The new ATI's are due soon too.

Yup, I want a second 980. I run a 1080p 42 inch sony bravia as my screen. Do I need it? hell no, but I've got a 900d case, and that's a lot of wasted space, and I was planning a couple of extra monitors, and a custom water cooling loops, and..... cause science.

If you can afford it, and even slightly feel you can justify it, then go for it. If you're happy with what you've got, then don't bother.

BTW, if you're using cause science as a justification you need one great slap upside the head.

I'm kinda on the same boat right now. I really want to replace my perfectly working GTX 650 Ti Boost for a second hand miner 280x or maybe 290 just because they offer twice the performance. And probably the only game I'm gonna play aside CS GO is The Witcher 3 after it comes out. :D

I have a crossfire 7970 set up. Wayyy overkill for 1080P. Yet im selling this rig, and my next one I either can get a 295x and the same monitor, or get a 290x and get triple.

not sure if its better to get more monitors later, or get another 290x later.
