Single 780TI owner, should i return my Asus ROG Swift?

markob53

Hi Everyone,

2 days ago i purchased the Asus ROG Swift as i was in line for a 2nd monitor and my original plan was to buy the Acer xb270ha 1080p g-sync monitor mainly because it was half the price of the Swift and i knew 1080p would play nice with my 780TI. But i just love everything about the Swift, it ticks every box and i just love the way it looks. So i gambled and bought it, knowing that my frames would drop playing at 1440p.

Now 2 days later i'm having some second thoughts, i don't strictly play the latest games on the pc and i have an XB1 too, but i want my computer to be good for ideally a couple more years or close, i built it at the end of last year and it has a 4790k i7 & 16gb ram. I'd just like that peace of mind that i could run most games on high/max for the next couple of years.

Currently the most demanding game i play is Shadow of Mordor and the frames on that range anywhere from 40fps - 70fps, but probably averages around 50-60, and it actually feels really smooth, even when it hits 40. I'm just thinking i could return it for a 1080p g-sync monitor and get an even smoother experience

What does everybody think?

  • keep it and upgrade later to sli
  • keep it and upgrade later to 980

I'm still saving for the swift it's worth it, more than any monitor.

until those smexy freesync gaming monitors come out

In my experience resolution is worth some tradeoffs in the settings (things like ambient occlusion). In the end I could tell you the swift was too expensive to begin with, but that obviously isn't a problem for you, so I'm wondering: is there something that you specifically don't like about it? If not, why return it? It's not a good idea to return or even buy stuff based on what may perhaps maybe happen in the future. If you're satisfied now, that's all that matters. And to be honest, the 780ti is sort of wasted for 1080p. 1440p is its playing field.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

What does everybody think?

Keep it, since in the future you will benefit and your monitor should last a long time

Personally I think if you have a 780ti you should be using 1440p (even if its just 60hz)

Thanks for the replies, it's reassured me quite a bit.

I absolutely love the monitor, i can't fault it one bit, out the box the settings are great, no dead pixels, 1440p looks great. 144hz even if i can't run it in all games looks great, so i don't really want to return it, i just want to have smooth gaming performance for the foreseeable future.

It did make me feel sick paying that amount for a monitor, i always said it was way too much, no matter how good it is. But i'd saved and thought why not. My plan is to start playing EVE Online or Final Fantasy A Realm Reborn soon, both of which run great on my specs and are going to take up quite a bit of my time, so i figured i'm good for a while.

When i play Shadow of Mordor and it dips into the 40's it bothers me, even though it looks smooth. I need to stop judging the performance on a number and start looking at what i'm actually seeing.

I like to stick to R E A L actual word. Not made up combination words. :D

It is considered actual word made through a process called blending and every word was once a made up word. Heard of "Googled", or  "Selfie". Language is something that is constantly changing/evolving unless it's dead like latin.

Here UD for you

Keep that shit and buy another GPU if you can.

Upgrading the GPU isn't really an option currently, probably in a year or 2. (ideally 2)

Its got GH-Sync, that should give you a little better experience at lower frames anyway.

Keep it. Buy a monitor for the next 5 years or longer. Buy a GPU for the present 1or2 years

Tbh despite the feedback to keep the monitor i feel like i'm leaning towards returning it for the Acer xb270ha, playing Shadow of Mordor last night it was dropping to 40fps and even though g-sync helps it's still noticeable to me, and there are more demanding games than Shadow of Mordor out there. I've had my pc for about 6 months and i didn't spend the money on it to play at 40fps.

Sure maybe the majority of games i play will run fine but i want that peace of mind that if a new game comes out i can be sure it'll run on max no problem, something that shouldn't be a problem in 1080p for my 780ti. It pains me because i want to keep it, especially because going from 1440p i may hate the look of 1080p now, but performance is important to me, you could argue my 780ti isn't up to the task now if i'm getting as low as 40fps in a game, so what will it be like in a year or two? It's a tough choice but i may at least explore the option of swapping it for the Acer and getting a bigger SSD with the change.
