Newegg Power Supply Calculator... Don't use it.

Just a general PSA for you all. (I meant to post this earlier, but forgot)

 

There are many ways to calculate how much PSU you need... but while there are some good calculators? Don't use Newegg's.

 

This is the result I got the other day for my new rig:

 

i7-5820k

Asus X99 Deluxe

16GB 2400 DDR4

2x GTX 970

1x SSD

2x HDD

6 fans in case, 2 on cooler.

 

Well... I got a 1000w PSU, which I thought  was overkill, but wanted headroom for my future upgrades. Well, Newegg thinks I'm insane!

So, the TL;DR?

 

Take the PSU calculators with a grain of salt... double, triple check what you're buying before you buy, as some sites are wrong wrong wrong.

 

(This may be an issue with them, but it could very much cause people to believe it, and waste money.)

What results does it offer for a 2255W load?

 

I didn't even bother looking. This is stupid.

 

It gets even worse with an extreme edition and more cards.

Wow, what a terrible excuse for a PSU calculator.  Recommends 877W for me (I have 600W PSU and can overclock fine)

You can only pull 1800 W from the wall @ 120 V and 15 amps.

It's probably very basic and adding "minimum recommended power supply" of each of the component, only way I can see how they could come up with a number like that.

From a site like Newegg, that's very bad. Basic, first-time consumers won't know better, and will be trying to find that kind of PSU, or several PSUs

i was trying to make a overkill build, but keep the wattage close enough to his. your glorious furnace is definitly way ahead :P

If you want an idea of what you actually require from a PSU then watch this. Power hungry 680 plus an i7 3770k, both overclocked with hard drives, fans, all the things going on.

|PSU Tier List /80 Plus Efficiency| PSU stuff if you need it.

I used the eXtreme Power Supply Calculator when doing my current build and it was pretty close to the actual pull of my system.

It overshot by about 30% but looking at some other websites out there it seems like it was pretty close.
