Qualcomm Reveals Its New Top-Of-The-Line Snapdragon 820 Processor At MWC, Shipping In The Second Half Of 2015

This is less a showcase of the 820 and more of Qualcomm acknowledging its existence and when it will start shipping to devices, I'll look around of more details (maybe later on at MWC someone will say something) but for now it seems like Qualcomm is just shopping the chip around and seeing who wants to take the plunge.

@ahhming found some more information so I'm just adding it here

Zeroth cognitive computing platform. For the past several years, Qualcomm has been working on Neural Processing Units (NPUs), as the company calls them, which are processors that mimic human learning.
The Snapdragon 820 will be the first chip to comes with NPU

Qualcomm said that the Zeroth platform could be used for things such as more advanced behavioral-based authentication, recognizing objects in photos, more accurate handwriting, increased optimization for LTE connectivity, improved speech and audio recognition, and more.

The press release below doesn't delve into speed or raw capability, instead focusing on built-in functions like enhanced photos, wireless radio innovations, security features, and "always on" services. It does confirm that the Snapdragon 820 will use a 64-bit architecture (not surprising, since the 810 and lower-power chips like the 610 and 410 are also 64-bit). The codename for the new chipset is "Zeroth," and the architecture of the CPU itself is called "Kryo." Qualcomm will likely be seeking customers for the new chips behind closed doors at MWC.

In the last couple of months Qualcomm's position as the undisputed king of mobile processors has become more shaky. Samsung has elected to use its own Exynos processors in the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, going without a Snapdragon model for the first time, and the benchmarks show that those phones are considerably faster than their Qualcomm-based competition. (Note: benchmarks can be manipulated fairly easily.) There have also been rumors of overheating with the Snapdragon 810, and we've seen at least some evidence of thermal throttling in the G Flex 2.

I'm excited to see what this chip can do. Hopefully the thermal throttling won't be an issue with this chip.

Well, based on previous Snapdragon chips, it'll probably throttle.

First run:

Final run:

For example the GS5- 27.9 fps and once it starts throttling, it only gets 19.8 fps about 30% loss in performance due to throttling. Note 4 26.7 vs 15.08. Of course, the metal phone doesn't throttle as much if at all- M8 29.9 vs 25.

Edit: I should probably include a source.

It'd better be a die shrink from the 800/810, because those were already both getting warm, with the 810 having huge throttling issues

My phone has a S2 (MSM8255).

And I still don't know what to upgrade to. Everything seems to be a compromise. Maybe a Zenfone2 or a marked down Z3 Compact or maybe I'll just wait until 2016 and hope that someone will finally make a good phone again.

I don't really play many games for gameplay anymore honestly. I play most games just for the graphics.
