Canadian pricing for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge

galaxys6handson-03319.jpg

@LinusTech once mentioned the term "butthurt", well guess what Canadian Samsung fans? Your butts are definitely going to be a little sore after looking at the marvellous pricing of the S6 and S6 Edge in Canada. Rejoice at the bonkers off contract prices (not a fault of Samsung, thats the flagship pricing game these days) but also enjoy the contract minimums that Mobile Syrup is projecting.

Ouch. Very ouch. Carriers are certainly having their way with us up here. Tom Wheeler, please help?

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge were officially announced yesterday. These are two new smartphones from Samsung and promise to bring a premium design to its flagship smartphones. While we know that Rogers, Bell, Fido, TELUS, Koodo, SaskTel and Videotron have all confirmed its upcoming release on April 10th, what was missing was the price.

This morning pre-orders started and we can confirm the following price points:

Videotron:

Samsung Galaxy S6:

32GB: $249.95 with reduced price on monthly $84.95 plan
32GB: $349.95 with reduced price on monthly $74.95 plan
32GB: $699.95 Retail price

64GB: $359.95 with reduced price on monthly $84.95 plan
64GB: $459.95 with reduced price on monthly $74.95 plan
64GB: $809.95 Retail price

128GB: $469.95 with reduced price on monthly $84.95 plan
128GB: $569.95 with reduced price on monthly $74.95 plan
128GB: $919.95 Retail price

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge:

32GB: $349.95 with reduced price on monthly $84.95 plan
32GB: $449.95 with reduced price on monthly $74.95 plan
32GB: $809.95 Retail price

64GB: $459.95 with reduced price on monthly $84.95 plan
64GB: $559.95 with reduced price on monthly $74.95 plan
64GB: $919.95 Retail price

128GB: $569.95 with reduced price on monthly $84.95 plan
128GB: $669.95 with reduced price on monthly $74.95 plan
128GB: $1019.95 Retail price

Wind Mobile has also said they'll be getting the phone, as listed here:

A number of Canadian carriers have announced plans to release the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. As with previous Samsung flagship smartphones, there will be no carrier exclusivity and most will bring these devices to their lineup on April 10th.

Here’s the running tab of the Canadian carriers that have confirmed the upcoming GS6 and GS6 edge release:

Bell – Pre-registration is now open
TELUS – Pre-orders start March 5th for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge
Rogers – Confirmed to release both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge
WIND Mobile – Confirmed release of both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge
SaskTel – Confirmed release of both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge
Videotron – Pre-orders start March 2nd for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, offering free headphones

Update: Rogers and Fido are offing a free wireless charger when you reserve the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge through its online reservations system. Apparently this has a retail value of $59.99.

$1000+ phones aren't a new idea in Canada. The iPhone 6 Plus, for example, is $1079 for the 128GB model unlocked. It's something the major companies' flagships are usually guilty of.

Lol this is the reason I still have my no contract IPhone 4.  Contracts are evil, and I won't spend $1000 CAD on a phone.

Yeah....manufacturers are getting a bit bonkers with the prices these days. Most people change their phone within a couple of years so paying that much for a phone is somewhat nuts...I spend quite a bit of money on, for example, headphones or monitors b4, but I keep them for a long time.

But well....it's working for them :P

I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of phone sales are subsidized by the carriers for buying a contract as well. I would bet that a very small percentage of people are paying full retail price for their new phones.

Carrier subsidies are huge here, but the plans are insulting. Rogers wants you to pay 70 a month for 250mb of data. Not kidding.

For sure. I have Bell Canada for my wireless.

I have a loyalty plan (From their retention department), and that is still $65/mo w/ 1GB data. In some countries, my plan would be a joke.

Omg this is why I use wind but they sorta suck throughout the Vancouver area.

Canadians carriers here are all own under 3 big companies and everything except wind is run by one of those 3 D: It's outrageous the plans here.

Might want to buy this but i might actually wait for note series.

Isn't there a plugin that automatically fixes font colour for night-theme users?

True, but I am one of those people that buy their phones off-contract. The carriers here in sweden are utter shit when it comes to repairs and service (I have no idea if theyre better anywhere else, but I kinda doubt it). When I do get a phone on contract, I sell it without opening the box and save the money to buy something else.

But yeah, you're right; I realise Im the exception  ;)

This really shouldn't be all that surprising. A little, maybe, I'd have figured the S6 would be $599, and it's a little disturbing to see Samsung following the Apple trend of really over charging for more storage, but other than that it's right on par with what phones cost. Especially taking into consideration the now 2 year contracts as opposed to 3.

And that is why i have necer been intrested in the highest end phones.

While true, flagship phones are often quite a bit better than the Zenphone.

Though it does look tempting, and I hope that it lives up to the hype. I'm worried that it'll flop battery life wise, and I really hope you can use both SIM cards as well as the microSD slot.

Lol this is the reason I still have my no contract IPhone 4.  Contracts are evil, and I won't spend $1000 CAD on a phone.

Contracts aren't that bad. Some countries actually have pretty solid contracts.

Carrier subsidies are huge here, but the plans are insulting. Rogers wants you to pay 70 a month for 250mb of data. Not kidding.

Haha, you're getting royally ripped off if you pay that. Even within Rogers.

I don't think anyone actually has that plan.

It's not going to be 200-250.

It's going to be 300-430.

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/315156-asus-zenfone-2-pre-orders-start-prices-revealed/

Possibly.
Considering the phone hasn't even been officially released yet, those prices could come down.

I'm more interested in the edge than anything. I can't wait until reviews start coming in about this device. But no micro SD is a deal breaker.

My profile pic is the game i'm currently playing. I hope i remember to change it..
