GTX 780 ti SC to GTX 980 worth the upgrade?

Currently I have a GTX 780 ti SC (this one to be exact: EVGA GTX 780 ti Superclocked 3gb ACX Cooler 03G-P4-2884-KR)

Would it be worth it to upgrade to a 980? Currently I have a 1080p 144hz monitor, but I'm looking to upgrade to 1440p, something along the lines of the Asus ROG Swift. If i could get around 60+ FPS at 1440p, that would be great so any ideas on what I should do or if I should just wait for the next release, would be greatly appreciated!

TBH it's not worth the upgrade. Wait at least 1-2 years. The rule is that once your card starts to hit below 45fps in well optimized games, then it's time to upgrade. Also as said above the 970 is below the 780 Ti in performance.

Nope, it would be more worth it to just get a 2nd 780ti.

No, the 780ti is worse than both, but not by a lot.

That's a joke, the 780ti is within spitting distance of 980 when you are talking about overclocked cards, considering you have nearly double overclock headroom on 780ti compared to 980. (35% average clock bump vs 18%) The real world difference is closer to 5%

overclocks depends on if you get lucky or not

and the 970 and 980 overclock much better than a 780ti, reaching 1600+MHz on air cooling

either way its not worth the upgrade

Lol, I love your enthusiasm for the 900 series but you always greatly overstate their power, I have never ones seen a maxwell card in any review hit 1600mhz with the exception of one. In fact it's quite rare to see them pass 1550mhz. And that is up from your usual stock clock of 1300mhz? Not a huge increase. But then you look at 780ti which has average stock clocks of about 900 and easily pass 1200mhz on most samples....the mhz might be not has high but the overclocks are obviously much higher. But yes 900 series crushes 700 series when you compare them at stock, of that I have no doubt.

The 780 Ti is still a great card. I would wait at least until AMD launches their 300 series to see what is around the corner. You are not going to get a whole lot more out of a 970 or 980 than your 780 Ti.

23% increase is still a lot for what you didn't pay for our of the box :P

Wait until DX12 is fully announced then decide whether you buy another Ti or get 980. I mean, being able to combine cards vram is a big thing.

Except nobody ever gets 23%, you are lucky to get 20%. However it's rare not to get 1200mhz plus on 780ti. Check out linus' overclocking dock to give you a small idea. It's not a huge batch but you can get a generalization of overclocks from it.

Yeah, and there are people who get 40+% on last gen cards. But everything that has an average of what you can expect.

That isn't too surprising. The reason the 900 series is skewed is because they come out of the box at higher clock speeds than most graphics cards can even overclock to. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=970&N=-1&isNodeId=1

I mean look at that? Most of them boost well over 1300 out of the box and even get close to 1400. Even if you could acheive a 1550mhz clock from 1342 that's a pathetic 15% lol. And you would be lucky to hit that oc considering there are plenty of cards that have trouble past 1450. Imagine getting an evga acx with a boost of 1342 and only overclocking it to 1450. ew.

Basically, if you want better power efficiency, yes. Otherwise get a strix one because it is cool; looks nice and has a good cooling configuration.

I am also waiting to upgrade but the 980 is not it. It is not that much better in performance to warrant an upgrade. I am waiting for at least a 980ti or something that is a big step up. A regular 980 is just not that big of a jump really.
