How do I get rid of a virus?

Joelbanks5

I accidentally downloaded a virus, what should I do?

So what's happening is I go to turn my computer on and I login and all but once I login the screen goes black. I can move the mouse around and open up the ctrl alt delete screen and use thing on that screen but that's all. I'm not sure what else I should say because that's all that happens. If I need to post anything else about what's going on that I forgot please tell me, I don't really want to go pay anyone to fix it for me.

Doesn't look like a virus to me. Try opening the Task Manager (ctrl+shift+esc) then selecting File > New Task and then writing "explorer.exe" in there.

Any unknown button should be pressed even number of times.

If it's a troll virus, the program probably just renamed explorer.exe to something else...

If you can't figure it out, you can recover your data by booting into a Ubuntu (or another linux flavor)  disc and moving your documents/pictures/games to a backup drive. Then you re install windows and restore your data.

That's just one part of it, should I take pictures of the rest or just out it all into a list?

1)Open up task manager

2)Under Processes terminate "explorer.exe"

3)click the applications tab in the task manager

4)At the bottom left hit "new task"

5)enter "explorer.exe" into it and click ok

That should do the trick.

I've been doing that a few times now, I open explorer.exe then it doesn't pop up or anything so then I tried again. I just did it again and the screen popped up.

Should I restart the computer to see if it still gives me a black screen or runs like normal?

Ok, so I'm looking through the applications on the computer and I'm not seeing the thing I downloaded. Is that it? Whenever something like that happens just do that and it'll be gone for good?

Yea you should be fine now, doubt it was a virus, maybe some adware or something that interfered with your explorer... glad you fixed it

So far it's working great, I've only had one problem though. The Internet keeps randomly opening to a specific site and when I get on the Internet intentionally every few times I click I'll get an ad pop up or have a new tab that opens to that ads site.

What do I do about that problem?

Factory reset will solve the problem!

Don't factory reset, its unnecessary this is an easy fix, click the 3 lines in the top right corner of your browser (under the "X") and then hit settings>advanced settings>reset settings

that happens sometimes after a windows update. Do a system restore from safe mode.
