Converting a good-for-nothing laptop to a gaming laptop

Rayhaan Jiwani

Hello to everyone on this community, this is my first post, but anyways.

I wanted to know whether this http://www.banggood.com/EXP-GDC-Laptop-External-PCI-E-Graphics-Card-Mini-PCI-E-Set-p-934367.html with a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 970 can actually work on my HP Pavilion dv4. And if it can, can I convert the Pavilion dv4 into a gaming laptop with a Corsair RM Series 450w PSU, an 850 EVO and the GTX 970?

Just remove the 'with' from the URL when you open it, I don't know why the 'with' came.

CPU: i5 4690K @ Stock                GPU: Asus GTX 970 STRIX @ Stock      SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 120GB (OS and Drivers)     Headset: Audio-Technica M20X

As NeatSquidYT said a 970 would be bottlenecked to the point where the performance between it and a 750 ti would probably be indistinguishable. Get a 750 ti/r7 260x with that cpu. Try and find either a cx430 or an evga 500w.

I think a 970 needs 30 amps per 12 volt rail with 2 six pins connectors so either of those PSU would work.

That laptop is an Old Dual Core ? so it will bottleneck the 970 I would think.   Maybe try a cheaper option that wont be bottle necked so much.

People are avoiding the EVO's right now because of the problem with the TLC nand flash.  So you want a SSD with MLC instead.

And what about the 4 gigs of RAM I have in my system? Should I upgrade to 64-bit and add more RAM (probably replace the 2x2 GB sticks with 2x4 GB)? And what about the HP drivers then because I think HP custom makes their webcam, support assistant, etc. apps for each laptop model? Will I be able to use my 32-bit (Windows 7 Home Basic) serial key for 64-bit Home Basic? And where to get the installation disk from? My parents won't let me buy a new license just for the installation disk? Or can I download and ISO?

4 gigs is the bare minimum for gaming.  But it should be fairly functional.  As long as you dont have a browser open with a bunch of tabs while your gaming it should work ok.

You cant use 32bit keys for 64bit windows I dont think.   Downloading the ISO is pirating and we cant really discuss it.

Downloading the ISO isn't pirating afaik, but getting a product key through means of illegal conduct is.

Id say dont upgrade the memory, just save your pennies for an all around upgrade down the road, to a real desktop PC

My parents won't let me get a desktop PC (But I am a part of the PC Master Race, JK) since they think even Mini ITX is big. What about the HP apps/drivers since I'll still be replacing my HDD with an SSD? BTW, I play games without anything open.

I think this video from NCIXcom will help you out

they build a very small form factor 970 build, maybe that will convince your parents ;)

Nope sir that wouldn't cut it. I myself sat and made a rig spec sheet with 5+ hours of research but my parents think that even Mini ITX is huge, (not big but huge) so they just wouldn't budge. It's not the money, it's the space they care about. So my best bet is to get the external GPU set up till I get a new laptop. And if the set up works, then I can just get a quad-core laptop with a low-end GPU and play with this.

Anyways, can someone tell me about the HP apps/drivers? 'Cause I'll be replacing my HDD with an SSD. And what about other company apps/drivers because my next laptop is really not gonna be HP, probably Lenovo.

Forget Lenovo. If you want eGPU, your best bet is one of the Alienwares or the MSI GS30. At least get some decent quality in your machines.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

THE INFORMATION GUIDES: SLI INFORMATION || vRAM INFORMATION || MOBILE i7 CPU INFORMATION || Maybe more someday

The starting price of Alieware is too high. It starts at Rs. 99,990 (USD 1618) for only 13 inch whereas a normal quad-core laptop will be portable and I can use it for gaming.

Well people thanks for your help but I'm not properly part of the PC Master Race. I got my own gaming rig (it's Mini ITX though).

Vista-8.1 does not limit keys to 32/64-Bit. Recently, I've downgraded a number of Asus All in Ones to 32-Bit because they were running Point of Sale software that was incompatible with 64-Bit versons of Windows. In this case specifically, it was Win7.
