Why is my FireStrike so low?

SimonWhite

Brand new computer, fresh windows install, get everything how I like, get chrome, drivers, ninite, window settings. Download and run firestrike. Seems really low, anyone have any idea why? GPU1 usage is at 100% pretty much the entire time, and the temps never go above 78c. 290x is supposed to be roughly equal to a 970, yeah?

I forgot to post the link to the scores... oops. Or say really anything useful in here.

The machine is a i3 2100 and R9 290X, score was 7100.

I put the card (290x) in my machine with the 4790k and got 9700. It's the CPU, NOT a bottleneck but a bad physics score.

My bad guys, ignore me please.

But it can. Bottlenecks aren't a cut and dried X CPU can support Y GPU. Depends on your framerate and in-game settings. For example my i5-4690K is enough for SLI 980s if I wanted to play Battlefield 4 at 4K for example, no bottleneck. But my i5-4690K will also bottleneck my GTX 760 if I play at 720P since it can't keep up with the framerate at that point, and starts to be a bottleneck in BF4 around 110-120 fps.

9700 is still low. Stock clocks?

You can't be serious.  Hyperthreading is a market joke?

If you do things that make no sense like running lower than your system can comfortably run, then sure. Doing things how it should be, that processor shouldn't be an issue.

Depends on the game. Any CPU in existence will be a bottleneck during 25-man raids in World of Warcraft, for example.

It's not as simple as saying X CPU is good for Y GPU, or will bottleneck Z GPU, or saying that it won't be a bottleneck if you run it the way you should or what-have-you... whether a CPU is a bottleneck depends greatly on how CPU intensive the game is, what in-game settings you run, and what framerate you run.

Given my example of 720P and 110-120 fps, let's change things up a bit.

My i5-4690K isn't a bottleneck for a GTX 980 if I play at 1440P. But if I wanna play at a rock solid 144 fps on a 1080P 144Hz monitor (GTX 980 is well suited to a 144Hz setup), my i5-4690K is gonna cause some dipping below target framerate since it's getting maxed out at that framerate.

Intel i5-4690K @ 3.8GHz || Gigabyte Z97X-SLI || 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz || Asus GTX 760 2GB @ 1150 / 6400 || 128GB A-Data SX900 + 1TB Toshiba 7200RPM || Corsair RM650 || Fractal 3500W

The CPU will be the limiting factor to performance in many games though...just saying...firestrike is not a very good example of this but many games will saturate a core i3 CPU before it has any chances of feeding a GPU such as your R9 290X...a core i5 is the minimum i'd pair with such a GPU for gaming AAA modern titles.

not bottlenecking isnt about having the best of something, its about the weakest link.

in most games the gpu is the bottleneck, but at low resolutions and details of easy to run games even a gt640 etc woudnlt be the limit as they'd be more then capable of getting super high fps however the limit then becomes either the cpu or the game engine or directx even the hard drive and internet in some scenarios.

Your graphic score is 11k which is about right for 290x with an i3 imo.
