Will a lga 2011 waterblock fit a lga 2011v3?

The title says it all. I'm getting parts for a new computer and just making sure they are compatible.

no.  you would need different mounting hardware

Pretty sure they should for the most part. Isn't it just the same socket with the pins located in slightly different places or something?

hmm I guess I was a bit misleading... Most coolers come with mounting hardware for both sockets

the socket is the same

the mounting hardware is the same

the CPU size is the same

the only difference is the number of pins on the bottom, just like 1156 and 1155 and 1150

a 2011 cooler will fit on 2011-3

No it is not the same. LGA 2011-v3 mounting holes are not the same. They are a little further out on the v3.  Some mounting brackets have a couple different holes in it like the bracket on the  Corsair H100i GTX AIO.  In the image on the bottom.  The bracket on bottom half shows how much further out the holes are to mount.

Now if you're trying a cheap Barrow waterblock you will have to use different hardware and and driĺ the holes like shown below.  You'll need shorter motherboard stand-offs than the H100i GTX because if you don't,  the block will not even touch the cpu.   (Info is for anyone looking for it as no one else has ever explained it properly - at all.  And this what I did when my AIO failed after a few years due to just loosing coolant over time.
