Cheap ~$30 DSLR Shotgun mic

First, a quick question:

Can you use a DSLR shotgun mic as a good podcast/voice over mic as well?

That was not a cheap mic, it was a mid level mic ($250). Big difference in quality.

I realize that. But it's the same concept.

No. Well yes, a shotgun mic works well as a boom or desk mounted microphone, or even sitting on top of a monitor.

But $30? Nope. Gonna be terrible quality.

Look at Lavalier Microphones instead, here in Australia, a semi-decent one starts at about $60, but if you're in the US you might be able to find one at $30. Even on those mics, the audio quality isn't great, but they give a good presence.

Many youtubers starting up use things like the ATR 6550, a cheap mic, but still excellent sound

Costs a fair bit more than $30 though IIRC? And a similarly priced Lav mic is what I'd go for, but if you can't mount a mic on your body for whatever reason, it's still an option.

Though I regret cheaping out on audio gear, cause I had to rebuy all of it within a month,
