Rasberry pi for media server

Will a raspberry pi work for a media server? Or is not powerfull enough to transcode movies and tv shows, any help is greatly appreciated thank you.

Will you be using it to watch media from another system?

It can definitely serve, but it's not powerful enough for any real transcoding.

 

You'll have to either transcode it beforehand, or not need to transcode it in the first place.

What Tedster said.  also running any kind of "media center" type interface will be slow as hell.

 

Is the Pi 2 any better? I just have a regular Pi. not the new v2.
