New Build (Could use some GPU help)

Moldiver

Currently building a new pc and allready have the case, OS SSD and memory on this list. Is there anything I should be changing on this list to imporve the build?

Think my final problem I have is the GPU, don't know wether to go 970 SLI or 980 and then buy another 980 later on in the year.  Am I better getting a lower priced 980, say the Asus Strix?

if you know your're going to be able to buy another 980 then get single 980 now.

As far as I know, it seems fine to me. Make sure your not going over kill on the psu, and try putting this build on pcpartpicker, might find some better deals. Also, I think 2 970's in sli are better.

Value wise the SLI 970s are better... but if you don't mind overpaying, the 980 is the single fastest single-GPU card out for now... go for it.

Thanks, think I'll go with the 980 Strix, great card by the looks of it and cheaper than the Matrix.

Also I like to stream but with certian games my fps takes a hit on my i7 950, how much of a hit on frames will the 4790 take when streaming?

The reason I ask is I was gonna keep my old PC as a streaming pc but If i can get away with having one then I can sell some of the old parts on and even reuse some.

Things I'd change:

  1. Get a cheaper mobo. That one is a complete money waste.
  2. Smaller capacity SSD. I'm yet to fill my 128gb SSD, even after 1y of usage.
  3. Raijintek Triton as the CPU cooler of choice.
  4. SLI Gtx 970, instead of the 980.
  5. 650w PSU, instead of 850w.

The Ranger looks to have very little different but with it being closer in price to the hero the £20 doesn't reallyt bother me (trying to keep with thye black and red theme and I genrally like Asus) .

SSD was a black Friday deal, got it for £100 so no brainer when it's on sale at £150.

The Raijintek Triton looks good, will look into that

I plan to SLI the 980 in a few months if i get that so seems like a better option.

850 watt is the sweet spot for me on PSU, doesn't seem overkill and gives me peace of mind that everything will run fine for very little price difference.

Thanks.

Just to put it in perspective, the most 980s in SLI will draw is around 450W.  That's at 100% load.  Even at 80% efficiency (680W), that is a whopping 230W for the system.

Here:  This is the power consumption of a stock 4790K with a PC (motherboard/SSD, minimum) 109W:  http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/geforce-gtx-980-sli-review,4.html

Let's say you draw another 50W from a CPU overclock, GPU overclock, 2 HDDs and case fans.  609W generously.  I guess 850 is not too bad.  A good gold 750W will more than do as well.

@Moldiver

What Monitor are you using ?

If you go with a GTX 980 then Overclockers have the Gigabyte G1 on a 'This week' offer.

Or if you go for a GTX 970 then the KFA2 card will give you free delivery on your basket if you are mainland UK

YOUR BASKET
Total : £755.98 (includes shipping : ).

A set of Red/Black braided cables would look good if you have the budget

YOUR BASKET
Total : £75.92 (includes shipping : £4.98).

When I said "cheaper mobo", I meant ACTUALLY cheaper. Say.... 60£ cheaper. Like this one: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-gaz97xgaming3

Actually, the sweetspot for Gtx 980 SLI is closer to 650w than 850w. 850w is already outside of the optimum range for efficiency.

If you use Shadowplay then it shouldn't affect performance that much (5%-10%)

Running 1080p at the moment waiting for some of the new monitors to drop. Using OBS for streaming.
