Are r9 300 series cards worth the wait?

Splashzed
Go to solution Solved by D3MON,

@KayTees hahah great idea

@JefferyD90 i said i will not spend 400$ on a gpu and the r9 390/x will probably be about that pricepoint.

@D3MON if you're not kidding then i guess you mean that i should get the 290 and after 2 year change it which doesn't sound bad to me at all...

I am leaning towards the buying right now and my main choice would be the 290x but i have a 550w psu, it's a decent psu, will it handle the card?

PCpartpicker says that there are no incompatibilities/issues...

I was "taking the mick" a bit but it is actually what I'm doing, I bought my 290 on black friday for £200 while the msi 970 costs £283+ right now and we know the 970 doesnt have a 40% performance lead.

even if the 300 series is mostly rebrands and my 290 becomes a "380" it'll still be a baller card and if the price is the same will still be a beast value card, I can't imagine there being a  price drop, the size of the die, the cooler with all its heat pipes and big fans the amount of vram, the 512bit memory bus, its a very expensive card to make and i don't see the margin being there to price drop.

depending what the 390 and 390x perform and cost like i'll probably get the one with the best fps/£ (probably 390) and sell my 290, I bet I can get £190 for it (boxed, as new with warrranty).

under furmark I draw 487watts so a 550w is fine.

Hi guys,

i am really on the edge of waiting i mean i have the money but i'm not buying a card because of the upcoming amd ones, now since i am pretty sure that most of them are going to be rebrands and given the fact that i'm not going to spend 400$ on a gpu i will probably not get the one that isn't a rebrand.

Is it worth the wait? I mean my budget is around 250-300$ for a gpu, i'll be playing at 1080p...

I am seeing a lot of games that i want to play but i can't so it's frustrating, what should i do???

Thanks in advance to whoever answers..

Bye!

Currently your best bet is a 290x but a 300 series card appears like it is definitely not a rebrand

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

We do not know how the 300 series will perfom.  I would just buy a card now.

If you're confirmed to only game at 1080p, I suggest a GTX 970 or a R9 290x, I guess most 300 series cards will almost be rebrands of the 200 series but with newer chips and a higher clock speed (thats like every card) but I won't wait. Or buy a R9 290X, use it for 2 weeks, refund it, get another one from a different dealer/vendor, keep doing that until the 3xx comes out and decide then :D

I still don't understand all the fuss about this "rebrand". Of course the lower end models are just going to be rebranded current models, but we KNOW that the R9-390 and 390X are all new designs, just like every single generation. Fiji is the next GPU design to come out for AMD. Feel free to do some research.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

300 series will mostly consist of rebrands. Only new GPU will be R9 390/390X. Which will cost 350$+. So, not really, unless you specifically want R9 390X. Even then, still a question if they will live up to the hype. AMD can end up with another Tonga.

Get a 290/X right now. The deals are very good. And as other said, most 3xx will be rebrand from the 290/x.

Just go up to $330 and get a GTX 970. The 390/390x will probably launch at least in the $450/$500 range and the 380/380x are just going to be 290/290x rebrands. The R9 290 has gone up to $280 after rebate, which I think is too close to the 970 that you can buy to get a few more percent performance without rebates. If you're going AMD the 290x is the better deal, since you can get a PowerColor PCS+ R9 290x for $303 after rebate. PCS+ is a great cooler on Hawaii.

I woudlnt worry about the 4gb of vram thing and the 970 has some decent power savings.

however the extra price doesnt make up for those savigns and so long as your room is 21*c or there abouts and your power supply is enough theres no reason why not to get a 290 (dont think the 290x is worth it myself..)

the non rebranded 300 series will be the 390x and the 370.

so yes the rest will be rebrands buuut they'll be slightly beefier rebrands. if they cost the same as their counterparts but perform better.. can't really argue at that!

This is why nvidia has so much marketshare. They don't rebrand cards

Trololol

The 760 was a 670 with one less smx and the 770 was a 680 with higher clocks.  That's just the most recent offense and I ignored the bottom end of the market where they are still selling very old hardware as new 700 series cards.

The 770 isn't a rebranded 680. 680 had 6000 effective memory, 770 had 7200 effective memory.

Core I7 5960X / Gigabyte X99 SOC Force / Kingston 16GB DDR4 3000 / EVGA GTX 980 Classified's In Quad SLI / EVGA 1600W G2

If I were you I'd just go for it and buy the card now because the 290x will preform great right now and it will be great in the future as well.

the 770 is a rebranded 680 with just a few minor tweaks that can be accounted for by better yields in silicone production. linus has clearly pointed this out in many videos and i believe it was also mention in last weeks WAN show when talking about AMDs constant rebrands :)

I hate when they rebrand cards with higher clocks and if they do that the gain in performance isn't worth the wait anyway...
