About what $520 will get you in Australia.

mr moose

This is what $520 will get you right now:

IMAG0154.jpg

dual core Pentium, r9 270, 8G ram (single stick) bog stock Asrock Mobo.

Not a bad little performer.  I am quite happy with the results, I built this for my son for his birthday.

ALl I had to do was re-use his monitor and find an old case in the shed.

I was thinking I might mod him up a transformers case, any thoughts/ideas?

Creep up? GTX 970's in my area jumped from around $550 to well over $600 within 2 weeks.

Before you build it test the PSU. I had 7 of the VS series fail last week due to a shitty fan mounting causing a grinding noise as the blades hit the enclosure.

and yet a 980 is still 800 bucks. (still want that 390 to be competitive so the prices might drop...I really want a second)

wow, had the exact same issue with VS450 last week, had to rotate the fan upside to stop the noise. I guess bad decision to buy that PSU :(

might come close actually....  But quick question.... Does it matter? He bought the gear for under 600 bucks Australian. He might not get perfect efficiency out of the graphics card, but it's still a hell of a buy that his son can carry through to his next build.

Cheers, unfortunately I have already put it together, fortunately I seem to have gotten a good one, but I will keep my eye on it.  Thanks

How old is your son and what is he interested with?

13, mainly games (TF2, CSGO, terraria, minecraft) but he is mad a bout transformers and talks about drawing them for hasbro as his ideal career. He also wants to learn the internals of pc building so I am going to show him what I did and why with this one and then get him to research and organise upgrades for it.

I did my research, the best thing is not only did I get it all for under 600 but I got it all from the same shop so no running around or multiple delivery charges.  I'm pretty stoked.

I wanted the 280x but unfortunately I just could push the budget.

With that processor GPU combo it plays all the games he likes way in excess of 60FPS @ 1080.  and nothing is overclocked,  So feeling a good choice.  Next thing I'll do is get him an ssd and mod a case.

That was pretty much my thinking, and with it being the cuII it's not loud like the reference designs.   It'll keep him happy for a year at least.
