FCC Approves Net Neutrality rules, reclassifies broadband as a utility (+ other NN updates/FCC rulings from the hearing)

  •  “The Internet is simply too important to allow broadband providers to be the ones making the rules.” - Tom Wheeler, FCC Chairman

  • FCC passed Title II by a vote of 3-2

  • new rules largely resemble the “open internet rules” that Obama laid out three months ago

  • allegedly up until last week there was language in the FCC proposal that could “unintentionally allow Internet service providers to charge for sending content to consumers”

  • unsurprisingly, politicians that have funding relationships have been speaking out against title II regularly

  • FCC also overturned laws that protected ISPs from local competition

  • the FCC [now] has the authority to preempt state laws that prohibit municipalities from creating their own broadband infrastructure to compete against private companies.

  • “No one, whether government or corporate, should control access to the open internet. This is no more a plan to regulate the internet than the first amendment is a plan to regulate free speech. Some people call this a secret plan to regulate the internet. Nonsense!” - Tom Wheeler

  • begs the question, what caused this drastic 180 from the side of the ISPs to the side of the consumers, and should we be worried about a flip back?

  • BONUS ROUND: Verizon is super salty and released a statement listing just how mad they are titled “Title II Regulations a Net Loss for Innovation and Consumers”

  • “Changing a platform that has been so successful should be done, if at all, only after careful policy analysis, full transparency, and by the legislature, which is constitutionally charged with determining policy” (and also in the back pocket of the ISPs)

  • Full statement http://publicpolicy.verizon.com/blog/entry/fccs-throwback-thursday-move-imposes-1930s-rules-on-the-internet Verizon is salty TRANSLATION: http://publicpolicy.verizon.com/assets/docs/VZ_NR_--_2-26-15_VZ_Statement_on_Open_Internet_Order_FINAL_1.pdf

  • Jen-Hsun said he “can see why” consumers were disappointed with the misrepresentation of the GTX 970’s memory segmentation

  • goes on to reiterate that the GTX 970 is a 4GB card, even though the upper 512 MB has reduced bandwidth

  • failed to communicate that properly to the marketing team

  • “[The fact that people are/were upset] is understandable. But, let me be clear: Our only intention was to create the best GPU for you. We wanted GTX 970 to have 4GB of memory, as games are using more memory than ever.”

  • “We won’t let this happen again. We’ll do a better job next time.”

  • Spock has passed away

  • occurred early this morning at his home, confirmed by his wife Susan Bay Nimoy

  • caused by end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

  • announced that he had the disease last year, the result of years of smoking (a habit he had given up 30 years prior)

  • he acted since he was 8 years old (not professionally, but in community productions)

  • pursued many artistic expressions throughout his life including music (classic albums like “Leonard Nimoy Presents Mr. Spock’s Music From Outer Space”), spoken word, poetry, and photography

  • in his later years he re-invested in his Jewish faith, and often referenced that the split-fingered salute from Spock was based on the kohanic blessing, a manual approximation of a Hebrew name for God

  • “Given the choice, if I had to be someone else, I would be Spock.” - Leonard Nimoy

  • first heard of the issue 2/19/2015 (last Thursday)

  • products shipped between September 2014 and February 2015 were affected

  • promptly worked with Microsoft and leading anti-virus providers to get a fix, ended up with a full uninstall tool

  • also “reached out to SuperFish to disable all server activity associated with their product,” but does not list a response from SuperFish

  • Lenovo CTO “I'm not going to comment on the competitors but I think you guys know the reality of the state of our industry. Everyone is one step away from disaster and we're going to make sure that when we're done we're several steps away.”

  • announcement 2/27/2015 at 9:50am PT

  • first they will scale back preinstalled software

  • will still include Lenovo applications and some security software, but will work on removing all adware

  • second they will list all software that is preloaded on its PCs and explain waht each piece of software is for

  • may not matter to enthusiasts, but to the average consumer this is a huge plus, and could be a great reason to seriously consider Lenovo when purchasing

  • non-disclosure was a big deal with the SuperFish standards (Lenovo did not list SuperFish as a pre-installed software anywhere on product listings)

  • Lenovo will provide a free 6-month subscription to McAfee LiveSafe to those affected by SuperFish software

Intel plans to drop silicon after 10nm

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Commandman7

Source 2: arstechnica.com

Source 3: theregister.co.uk

  • Looking into indium gallium arsenide as a replacement.

  • Chip researchers are trying every; Graphene, gallium nitride, molybdenite, even carbon nanotubes.

  • Planned indium gallium arsenide transistor is 22nm in length, which may not sound impressive as Intel already uses a 14nm process to manufacture chips, with 10nm on the way, but silicon is fast approaching a brick wall.

  • The smaller transistors get the harder it is for them to handle current efficiently.

  • Indium gallium arsenide’s ability to conduct electrons is about five times better.

  • The material is already widely used in fiber-optic applications and in radar systems.

  • Intel is also looking into new types of packaging: 2.5D, where separate dies are placed side by side on an interposer, and 3D, where each die is stacked directly on top of each other. Both 2.5D and 3D packaging are good for reducing power consumption, with 3D really coming into its own with mobile and wearable devices.

Google's new AI has already learnt how to crush us at 49 games [update]

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Rohith Kumar Sp

Source 2: atari.com

Source 3: theverge.com

Source 4: g.co

Source 5: bloomberg.com

  • Google created an AI system that spends all of its time mastering video games.

  • This is "the first significant rung of the ladder" to building intelligent AI that can figure out how to do things on its own.

  • Research project by DeepMind Technologies that Google acquired last year.

  • The machines were shown 49 games on the Atari 2600, the home console beloved by all ’80s babies, and were told to play them, without any direction about how to do so.

  • The system pairs well-understood AI tech with a memory and reward system inspired by what's found in human and animal brains. When the computers passed a level or racked up a high score, they were automatically rewarded with the digital equivalent of a dog treat.

  • Google's AI system surpassed the performance of expert (game testers) humans in 29 games, and outperformed the best-known algorithmic methods for completing games in 43 instances.

  • The system, at its base, should be able to look at the world, navigate around it, and take actions accordingly.

  • This research marks the "first time anyone has built a single learning system that can learn directly from experience and manage a wide range of challenging tasks,"

  • "It's mastering and understanding the structure of these games, but we wouldn't say yet it's building conceptual knowledge or abstract knowledge,"

Maybe convince @Slick to make a separate channel for afterparties then?

Also, read your Twitter. I think i have a great video suggestion.

We don't just launch channels willy-nilly. Most afterparties are archived on Twitch for people who care enough, and for those who don't why would they want to go to the effort over subscribing to another channel.

Not going to happen anytime soon. Sorry :(

The second you spoke of reverb, I was already typing a message about acoustic treatment, Glad to hear you got a much better deal, it's really not that expensive material wise. Insulating the inside of the walls and ceilings with rockwool will already do wonders on it's own.

IF there's a raised area that overlooks the warehouse (usually manager's office or something), would be awesome for me if the show was recorded up there with the camera looking over all the sets below behind you guys.

Of course, it's likely to end up being the editing lounge or there is no such area, but throwing out there because never know ;)
