Video Card ?

DarthVader1022

Ok I try to make this as simple as I can.

I have asked this in another thread when I was looking for a new monitor but I figured this was more towards getting and talking about a video card,

Is it really worth it to run dual video cards in SLI or Crossfire or just run one good video card?

I been thinking of this ever since I started buying parts for my new ASUS X99 build for gaming only and I just can seem to figure if I should spend the money on two video cards or just buy one,I do want something I can play the games I play the most and that is COD series of games and the occasional Sword fighting games but mainly FPS games..

Now I know there is so many different types and brand name video cards out there that can start as low as $200.00 for what I think we would call a desent video card all the way up to $800.00 video card..

I know later on I like to have the option to play 4k so if I can get say one video card like this one here GIGABYTE GV-N980G1 GAMING-4GD GTX 980 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready SLI Support G-SYNC Support Video Card. which I am leaning towards because of the price..

So I would like to know would I still be able to play all my COD series games on my SAMSUNG P2350-1 Rose Black 23" 2ms(GTG) Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 DC 50000:1(1000:1).till I am able to save up the next few mouths for the ASUS PB287Q Monitor or one better..

you need sli 980 for 4k

A single 980 should do fine for 4K if you turn off AA, which you don't really need at such a high resolution anyways. (Sure you won't get 60+ FPS at max settings in more demanding games, but its sure as hell enough for gaming at 4k 30+ FPS with decently high settings.)

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

Or you could get two 290Xes fo the same price...

I would get the 980. I wouldn't bother with older cards. I personally would want full support on DX 12. Older cards will have basic support still though.

You can't be serious.  Hyperthreading is a market joke?

i've always been a proponent of a single powerful card is a better solution than 2 slower cards but 4k at 60 fps pretty much requires 2 high end cards,

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

Thank You all for your help,

With very carefull thinking of what I wanted to buy I went ahead and ordered the GIGABYTE GV-N980G1 GAMING-4GD GTX 980 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready SLI Support G-SYNC Support Video Card which I really hope it was the right choice of video cards to buy..

So did I make the right choice everyone?

Thanks

Whatever you do don't put Furmark anywhere near it, its what killed my GTX 970 G1 Gaming at stock clock.

there should never be an issue with any card crashing any stress test that should never be an issue there must have been something wrong with his card/system

If this is just a gaming PC then you're a bit inefficient with your platform choice.

Z97 with DC will give you all the CPU hp you need esp for COD games and there's no need for the extra PCI lanes if you're only ever going to run 2 cards as neither crossfire nor SLI work well with 3 or 4 cards in games anyway.

The price premium for 980 is pretty steep and it's still not exactly resulting in high frame rates at 4k in sli.  That means you need g-sync, which is going to raise the price of the monitor substantially.

My thoughts, buy z97/DC and a midrange card (970/290/x) and a cheap monitor.  Once R9 390/x comes out it may make 980 cheaper or provide more options for 4k and give you time to save up and buy a monitor and the cards to go with them at the same time.

Everyone else who owns a GTX 970 G1, and even those who run them on lower end systems have no issues and easily hit 150MHz+ when overclocking. After running Furmark a few times the highest stable OC, even at maximum voltage, was +140MHz, within a month it was overvolted +87 to run stable. Furmark did exactly what its know to do, and killed my graphics card.

then you lost the silicon lottery maybe it had to do with running max voltage idk it just shouldn't happen
