deanc555

I can get them both for the same price so which one is better considering the d5200 has a low pass filter

The fold out screen of the 5XXX series is an extremely nice value-add.

When in doubt, re-format.

please never look at snapsport, it's totally pointless and doesn't give important information at all.

I can get them both for the same price so which one is better considering the d5200 has a low pass filter

First of, both the D5200 and the D3300 has a low pass filter, only three current Nikon crop cameras on sale now without an optical low pass filter are the D5300, the D5500, and the D7100.

that being said, the advantages of the D3300 are:

1. ISO, the D3300 gives you one more stop of native ISO at 12800 as opposed to 6400, although shooting at an ISO above 3200 usually doesn't yield useful pictures.

2. Video, the D3300 will shoot 60p at full HD, where the D5200 will only shoot at 60i or 30p at full HD.

3. Battery life, the D3300 and D5200 both use the EN-EL14a battery, but the D3300 gets a rated battery life of 700 shots per charge and the D5200 only gets your 500

4. Size and Weight, the D3300 weighs 460 grams with battery and SD card, that's 45 grams less than the D5200's 555 grams, the D3300 is also slightly smaller than the D5200.

5. Image processor, the D3300 uses the Expeed 4 as opposed to the D5200's Expeed 3, but if you are shooting RAW like you should be doing, it's not a big difference between the two.

6. Panorama, D3300 has built-in panorama mode, the D5200 doesn't, you can however create panorama in post processing.

and the advantages of the D5200 are:

1. Better RAWs, the D5200 produces 14-bit RAW files where the D3300 only shoots 12-bit, that means the D5200 stores more info in each photo.

2. Autofocus, the D5200 has 39 autofocus points, 9 of which are cross type, the D3300 has 9 autofocus points, 1 of which is cross type

3. Buit-in Mic, the D5200 sports stereo built-in mics and the D3300 gets only mono.

4. Screen, the D5200 has an articulating screen whereas the D3300 has a fixed screen

5. Time-Lapse, the D5200 has built-in Time Lapse mode whereas the D3300 lacks such feature

6. Bracketing, the D5200 has built-in bracketing feature used to create HDR photos, the D3300 will require this to be done manually.

I have a 5200, love it.

But honestly, i'd get a 3300 + better glass, or jump all the way to a 7200.

Personally, I got the 5200, because it was on sale for about 150 more than a 3300, because the 5300 was just out. Hindsight, I wish I had just gone full-frame, as I am more of a prosumer versus just someone who takes random pictures.

I would buy the 7100 on clearance once the 7200 releases, back when the t3i went on clearance I got it for $250.

But yeah, nikon full frames are fantastic, cannot wait for the D820
