Folding triggers worst coil whine yet - GTX 980 Reference

Hey all,

I've been contributing to the LTT folding team for the last week and really love the idea. My only issue is that when I start folding, my GPU heats up (to be expected) but it also cranks up with a really terrible whiny noise. The noise is also audible through headphones connected to the motherboards onboard sound card. Could you shine light on the issue? Though it only pops up for some work units, bizarre right?

Will attempt to get a video with the noise in it but will have to wait for it to pop up again.

Thanks in advanced!

Nothing you can do about it and it wont affect the card in any way. Could check with your vendor and see if it's RMA worthy but from what I've experienced most cards have some whine on certain loads, especially extreme loads like folding.

Thanks for that reassurance! Might chat to Gigabyte and see what happens.

Make sure it's actually coil whine and not just the noise of the fans going faster than usual

My 970 whines on core 15 WU's but not core 17 WU's. See if there is a difference, some coil whine is normal.

Coil whine sucks. Nothing you can do about it. My 970 does the same thing when folding. But not on anything else.

you cant fix coil whine

i just depends on what the GPU is processing

you might get a new GPU, but it will just coil whine on a different process

The core 15 units produce coil whine on GPus that don't seem to otherwise have it. the only real way to completely avoid that is to use linux as I believe you'll only get core 17 on linux.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

This. SO MUCH THIS.

One thing that I've noticed is that Core 15 can also sustain WAY higher OCs than Core 17. And the pitch of the whine depends on the frequency. By increasing the core speed, the whine frequency went up; so much, that it actually sounded quieter, even though the pitch is higher.

Most coil whine cannot be fixed. But i have seen a few rare cases where part of the contributing factor was actually a crap power supply. Because the card was getting crap power, coil whine would start when under load.

So, if you have a spare PSU, you could try swapping, that might help, but again, this was a rare case. If you have a decent PSU to start with, I wouldn't go out and buy one to test. :)
